Covid is back
Someone on Facebook said that China has gone into shutdown again because a new variant of covid is killing people or something? I haven't heard this on the news or anything so I don't know how true it is.
But I've also heard that vomiting is a new symptom of covid, and I have an extreme phobia of vomiting so now I'm going to not want to ever go outside again. I don't get why a respiratory infection like covid can make people vomit.
They've just closed all the testing centres here in the UK and everything is starting to go back to normal. I hope the new variant from China doesn't spread across the world as quickly as the original one did and then everyone returning to lockdown and fear again.
Ps. I am feeling more angry and worked up about it than I dare to express in this post.

Whole of Shanghai enters COVID lockdown despite lower symptomatic cases

China: Authorities extend COVID-19 lockdown in of Shanghai as of April 5 /update 5
Authorities extend COVID-19 lockdown measures in Shanghai, China, as of April 5. Plan for disruptions.
https://crisis24.garda.com/alerts/2022/ ... 5-update-5
Officials have extended lockdown measures throughout most of Shanghai as of April 5 amid ongoing COVID-19 activity. A citywide testing campaign is underway, and officials could conduct several rounds of testing before lifting measures. Under lockdown controls, residents must remain home, except for medical necessities. Exceptions may also be possible for essential goods, though available essential retail must implement capacity controls. Delivery services continue.
Highway toll gates, cross-river bridges, and tunnels are closed. Educational institutions are closed. All intercity bus services remain suspended. Increased health screenings are likely at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA), and other passenger transport hubs in the coming weeks. Authorities are diverting some international flights to PVG to different cities through at least May 1.
Authorities have advised residents not to leave Shanghai unless necessary; outbound travelers must present results of a negative nucleic acid test and antigen test taken within 48 and 24 hours, respectively. Officials do not require antigen tests for travelers who receive a nucleic acid test within 24 hours of departure. Officials have also banned interprovincial group tourism with Shanghai. Provincial and municipal governments in other areas of China will probably require individuals recently in Shanghai to undergo COVID-19 testing and/or mandatory quarantine periods.
The government allows factories to operate under a closed-loop system where employees live and work on-site and undergo regular testing. Nevertheless, some factories in areas under lockdown remain closed. Officials have denied significant disruptions at the Port of Shanghai; however, reports indicate that logistics sites and warehouses are closed or limiting operations, suggesting cargo processing disruptions are likely.
Coronavirus: Shanghai’s Covid-19 cases soar by a daily record of 13,354, offering no end in sight for citywide lockdown in China’s financial hub
The number of infections was the highest one-day tally, with 268 cases showing symptoms on Monday, compared with 425 a day earlier
Still, the city of 25 million residents took no chances, undergoing a citywide mass testing exercise over three days

The 13,354 infections was the highest one-day increase, topping the previous one-day high of 9,006 on Monday, translating into more than 33 times Shanghai’s total infections before the latest round of outbreak.
The vast majority of Shanghai’s infections were asymptomatic, with 268 symptomatic cases on Monday, compared with 425 a day earlier. Still, the authorities were taking no chances with the highly transmissible Omicron variant, vowing to track down, quarantine and deal with every single case to achieve what the government calls a “dynamic zero” Covid-19 policy.
“Once confirmed, all new cases will be transferred [to designated quarantine sites],” the Shanghai government’s Deputy Secretary General Gu Honghui said at a media briefing on Tuesday. “All new infections must be settled day by day, and no one should be left unattended.”

Latest COVID-19 update

On Thursday night, March 31, 2022, Shanghai decided to extend the lockdown on its eastern half as COVID-19 infections keep surging. Starting from 5:00 am, April 1, 2022, residents of the eastern half of Shanghai will be subject to a 14-day lockdown, 7-day lockdown plus 7-day community health monitoring, 7-day community health monitoring, or 7-day self-health monitoring plus COVID tests, based on the COVID-19 situation of the building/compound/area they live in. Except for the last circumstance, most residents will be unable to exit their compound during the period.
It is reported that the operations of the Port of Shanghai have been disrupted by Shanghai’s COVID-19 lockdown measures, despite authorities’ best efforts. Shipping giant Maersk estimates trucking services into and out of Shanghai will be “severely impacted by 30%”, as anyone entering the port needs a negative nucleic acid test certificate from the last 48 hours and drivers will face lengthy quarantine when returning to their home provinces. Some shipping companies have diverted their vessels to nearby ports, such as the Port of Ningbo in Zhejiang. However, it’s not an easy switch as COVID-19 control measures have already caused rising congestion outside both ports. The global supply chain may feel the impact in the following weeks.

Food deliveries in China’s financial and commercial hub, Shanghai, normally can be easily ordered with just a few swipes on a mobile phone. But as the country’s most populous city tackles its most serious wave of Covid-19 infections, lockdown measures have confined most of the city’s 25 million residents to their homes. As a result, food logistics have been severely hit and daily necessities are increasingly hard to come by.

@Joe90: if you are fully vaxxed and boosted, then you are likely to only have mild flu-like symptoms, if any symptoms at all. Covid is likely to become endemic, and stick around for a very long time; but those of us who are fully vaxxed and boosted, who wear N95 masks in public, who maintain social distance, and who wash our hands often have little to worry about.
Get nuked by Putin or get Covid. What a great choice we have at the moment.. ![]()

I think you will do alright; besides, it is also likely that lockdowns/quarantines may NOT happen!
I worry about the economy more, as the UK is struggling at the moment and a lockdown is the last thing we need. I thought we were through this.
It seems like China is starting it all over again, adding vomiting to the list of common symptoms. Next they'll be adding symptoms of the black plague to it, like where it eats your body starting from the feet and you die a slow, painful death without any vaccines or cure.
China and Russia really know how to f**k the world up, what with China's labs and communist government and Russia's nuclear missiles pointing to every non-communist country and its evil dictator that has to be autistic.
Can things get any worse? I do not want to spend all summer in lockdown. The government can't do it to us. I want to go on a vacation this year and get married. I am not having my plans screwed over once again because of China. Oh I hope there are massive protests and riots over this.

I heard that they're going to make assisted suicide for the mentally ill legal in Canada. Looks like it's for the best. How can anyone not be mentally ill just from living on this planet, anyway?
And my mother thinks she and I will be able to take on our Mother's Day weekend trip this when we had to cancel it the past two years. But she also though my father was going to be okay last month.

Exactly, it's not fair. We've just got to learn to live with it, going in and out of lockdown every summer will not solve anything. We've been in lockdown before but has the virus gone away? No.
Apparently 4 million people in the UK have covid. For f**k sake.
I don't think we'll ever have a normal life again.
I really wanted to do things this year.
I wanted to have a barbecue in my garden with all my family, because I haven't seen some of them for 3 years.
I wanted to go on a vacation with my boyfriend this summer.
I wanted to finally get married this year.
I have other plans too.
Now I can't do any of them because China has to f**k everything up like they did before. I hate China more than I hate Russia. At least if Russia drops a bomb on us we'll all just be dead. With China all they're taking away our freedom, so we've got to live and suffer. I hate them and their stupid little viruses.

There are some particularly unhelpful responses here which are very unlikely to ameliorate Joe90's worries.

Best to spend a while not listening to the news. I have had to do this and it helps reduce stress. I have found stress and the results of having stress to be far worse then having covid as stress is harder to get over. Covid just comes and goes and leaves.
So my advice is to avoid the news for a bit and get yourself stress free. Then if covid should come your body will be hardly effected by it because you will be happy and less stressed.
I took a break from things on this site as everything was about stress. I need to relax and so the break was good. I need more stress free time so I can recover.
Look outside. The sky is there. The grass is there. Life is still there... Go and enjoy it! Find a nice park or green area to walk in and enjoy! A field behind the house of anywhere you can find that has a nice footpath to walk in....

To my understanding, the situation in China is dramatically out of sync with the West because of their extreme Zero COVID-19 policy. There is a new variant spreading in the West but at least in the US it doesn't seem to be causing all that much alarm (although I far from disregarding it). To put things in perspective, I don't think they've even seen that variant in China yet, AFAIK they're still dealing with the "original" Omicron.
