How can you say that, when in this post, http://www.wrongplanet.net/postxf50198-0-15.html, you said "Ideally, smoking should be banned outright."? :D

Smoking harms children, and I don't think that people have the common sense not to smoke near children. It'd be better for everyone in the long term if smoking was banned.

It's not PC, it's common sense that it should be made illegal. It's disgusting and harms everyone.

OK, let's hear from the rest of you on this: Is Anubis right that it's common sense that smoking should be banned, or am I right that he's being PC and butting into other people's lives? (almost worth a separate poll  )

I think that you're putting general public health under the PC umbrella. I think that smoking should be removed from society slowly. First the adverts made completely illegal, then the slow process of weaning people off the habit totally.
I think that the sheer amount of deaths alone should be a reason to ban it, not to mention the huge strain on the NHS from all these people who are suffering from various smoking-induced illnesses. Nothing to do with political correctness, no, but protecting society from the horrible effects of tobacco smoking.

Did you ever think that society might not want you to protect it? Do you care?

The majority opinion in Britain today is that the ban on smoking in public is justified. Maybe it wouldn't have been so many years ago, but now that is the consensus. We're talking about one of the biggest, most invasive health risks in the modern world, not some silly PC nanny state business. Everyone suffers when people light up nearby. Kids suffer even more at home. The only way to reasonably ensure that children are safe from the risks is by banning it outright. Same goes for many additivess. Too many pollutant chemicals around.

I agree with you, ideally, note that it's been said ideally, it would be better. And I also agree about most people not having common sense, that is other reason why I believe gun ownership should be banned, ideally, but that's another issue.

No, just ban smoking, not killing the smokers ;)

People that own guns should be shot.

Oh, just threaten them with death, and then if they keep it up THEN we can kill them. Okay, warn them first, gotcha.

You changed the question, I want to change my answer.

The only people I know of who complain about "PC" are the same ones who long for the good old days when wimmen and coloreds knew their proper places.

What about those of us who are smart enough to know that "ho ho ho" is a catchphrase that has been accociated with Santa ever for as long as most of us can remember, and not a personal insult towards women? What about professional yard haunters who have been made to take down haning dummy props because people are emotionally sensitive enough to think they're racially motivated?
And now, people want to replace the term "brainstorming" with "umbrella thinking" because brainstorming" may be offensive to people who have seizures!
PC is spiralling out of control! Soon we won't even be able to say "hello" without offending someone!

This is known as the tyranny of the majority. Just because a majority thinks smoking should be banned is no excuse to take away the minority's rights. If the majority was in favor of re-instituting slavery, would that make it right to do so?

Sure they should, if you want the world to become a brainwashed, homogenised bunch of drones.

Especially when they come up with such stupid ideas as the following: some guys thought the word "brainstorm" should be taken out of circulation because it might be offensive to epileptics.

Now I am epileptic, and I've never even thought about that word in that fashion. Ever. If anything, I'm more offended that somebody decided I might find it offensive, without even consulting me.
