I think it's an obsession with rich people, regardless of whether or not they act "upper-class", and the fact that status is everything--anything below upper-class is "white trash".

You never hear about West Virginia in the media unless it involves a joke about inbreeding. That's how far the obsession with social status has gotten.

I think part is how the media glamorizes them...

another part is that sometimes people don't have anyone in their lives that they can look up to as a role model, who they can aspire to be, who they can take certain traits from and apply to themselves to become a better person.

another part is respect for those that are successful and contribute to society in a way that brings about change, whether it be bringing awareness to global hunger or educating others about animal abuse. Celebrities have a lot of power...I'm not sure why, but people seem to listen to them more than maybe people who should be heard more.

Obsessions with celebrities are ridiculous, I think, but admiring them for what they do isn't.

remember when Paris Hilton went to jail? how'd they react? they laughed. they laughed at this rich, spoiled, self-important selfish waste of life whining and crying to her daddy about having to spend a short amount of time in jail with all the other plebs over something that would've gotten anyone else sent up the river because she couldn't buy her way out of it.

THAT i think is why people are obsessed with celebrities. we don't want to see them succeed, we want to see them fail. miserably. we want to make these rich powerful beautiful people fail because we're disapointed in our own lives.

and it's a pursuit i fully support because i have no sympathy for celebrities. and neither should you.

I'm addicted to Evanescence and Within Temptation music, but you don't see me looking up every single story on Amy Lee or Sharon Den Adel. Sure, I get a bit excited when I see their name on a random site or something, but I don't get the whole "_______ put on 20 pounds! OH MY GOD!" thing.

I agree,

I can understand why people would be obsessed with what they do, I want to make the money they do too. But people are so obsessed with celebrities themselves. By that, I mean their personal lives. I don't give a crap what they do. Yet there are all these news shows that go on about what this celebrity is doing and so forth. Why should the things that celebrities do with their lives matter to anyone else? :?

They need to have their sheepish minds stimulated.
