Should PC people be able to control other people's lives?
Majority opinion is also called Mob Rule.
Banning things in public is oversteping your bounds. It is a legal product, openly sold, and there is nothing in the public interest about someone sitting in a park enjoying a pipe, and watching the ducks. Or on their porch.
Does in public include a farmer in his field? Children might see him from the road and become corrupted.
Smokers are nothing compared to industry, cars, busses, trucks, so if it is the public good, all causes should be dealt with equally.
Bars where the same old group met, drank, and smoked, were destroyed by the no smoking rules, then bought cheap and reopend as fern bars with oak and brass rails, for the yuppie set. They could not get a new liquor license, were not willing to buy for going rates, so they drove the customers from their neighborhood haunt of many years. A bar could not declare it's self for smokers only, it was the law, no drinking and smoking, no food and smoking, and it was theft of long built business, the only social club for many. Would it harm the public if some bars were smoking?
Since when do you have a right to dictate about what other people agree to do? Here the law also covered Private Clubs, places the public are not allowed. It is not an attack on tobacco, it is an attack on human rights.
You can have a cigar lounge, as long as you do not serve food or drink.
Here it came in with major hotel chains opening casinos, which do have smoking areas, where food and drink are served, because they come under casino law. Why? Because you must be 21 to enter. They killed the bar and restuarent business in New Orleans, with PC, then moved in. Drinks are free in the casinos. Parents were allowed to bring their children into bars, so your "What about the children?" was used to destroy a city industry.
They got the tobacco settlement, and pocketed it, doubled the price of tobacco, and pocket that. So this is a special tax on smokers? What next, taking their homes, cars, businesses? It has been done over possession of marijuana.
There are many places where a police stop involves an illegal search, like your pocket, wallet, car trunk, and if they find you with a few hundred in cash, it is seized as drug money. People on their way to buy a car, a machine, going to an auction, have had no charges, and all their money seized. A lawyer and ten years in court, maybe you can get it back.
PC is theft of Human Rights, property, livelyhood, without due process.
People need to mind their own business and stop trying to control our lives. Regarding smoking in Britain, I believe everyone who pays taxes is forced to buy government healthcare so smoking affects everyone when taxpayers are forced to pay the bill when smokers need treatment for lung cancer, emphysema, and other diseases.
'sigh'
So Ed..... Do you really belive that you can get people to respect you if you reply negatively? (as in the other thread, and sure let me use an example) something that means "Oh that's so amasingly stupid of you" isn't going to get anyone to look your way. I agree that makeing them criminals is a little extreme.
And as for control, that depends on the threats involved. Meth for one example, is vial #$% and was made illegal for a dam good reason. I for one am so glad I never tried it. After all, I certainly don't want draino, and powder from fire works in my body! While I smoked some in the past, it's no excuse for me to expose someone else. I wouldn't because of the physical pain I felt as a child. That's not the same as smoking away from people, but your putting them together.
Deliberate abuse, surely not. So awareness needs to come first. For some people, though, suddenly stopping would be bad enough that they would need the hospital for the bodies withdrawl, so instantly removeing all cigaretts is not the answer either. Like my mother's friend Nancy, for example. Smoked for most of her adult life. Tried to quit by suddenly smokeing none, and needed a doctor. She has to quit slowly, and regrets starting.
Sort of like someone that over eats, and is 400 pounds stops eating to loose weight. It harms their body, rather than helping. Now, did I need to call you stupid in any part of this? No.
We need to pull opinions on health and the effects of various substances out of our asses, and then armed with this invented information as a pretext we can stick guns in people's faces telling them what they can and can't put into their own bodies. Because, you know, people should be shot or thrown into cages with murderers and rapists so they don't do something bad for their health.
Eye rolling and sanctimonious condescension help too.

What happens when you ban things: people come up with alternatives. When this happens, we are then locked into an endless cycle of making various things illegal, until we end up with complete government control. Yay fascism, you f*****s.
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/cbc/winnipeg_superjuice
Superjuice is created using packets of high-potency yeast, usually purchased at brewing stores in Winnipeg, Bobby Monias, the regional youth adviser for Assembly for Manitoba Chiefs, told the round table on northern aboriginal youth issues.
People bring the yeast - which can produce more potent alcohol than regular yeast in just a few days - into the community, mix it with water and sugar in pails, and leave it to ferment for a couple of days, he said.
It's then put into two-litre bottles and sold for between $80 and $100 for each bottle.
"I'm not going to deny anything, because I've had my share of problems with superjuice. It's pretty strong," Monias, who works with youth in the Island Lake area of northeastern Manitoba, told CBC News.
"There's been a high rate of violence involving superjuice with young people of the four Island Lake communities, so we're just trying to make a change to stop the flow of superjuice," he said.
Several people have become ill and required hospitalization after drinking the homebrew, he added.
Latest in bootlegging
The four First Nations communities in the Island Lake area are dry, so no alcohol is allowed. However, RCMP said superjuice has become the drink of choice.
Let's see, start off with racist "We know best for the injuns" attitude and ban alcohol, a substance which makes living on a government-created racial apartheid ghetto somewhat bearable. Then, when people start making their own, ban the yeast used to make it. I can't f*****g wait until they start sniffing gas and/or hanging themselves, that's going to be just f*****g perfect, isn't it you murderous prickface control freaks?
Go die. Please.

I think Political Correctness and the Health Police are two different things.
I think if someone deliberately does something to themselves, smoking, overeating, etc., they shouldn't get a dime of my tax money if they get sick from it.
PC, on the other hand, tries to keep racist, sexist, homophobic jerkwads from denying people work, shelter, and a decent life, just because they happen to be the wrong sex, color, etc. .
There's a huge difference.

There's a huge difference.
And fails miserably. Let's fight institutionalized racism with...wait for it...institutionalized racism!
Hitler was ELECTED because the Germans thought they were being oppressed by the Jews.
This "huge difference" is just threatening people with death for different reasons.
And when was the last time you had a choice in where your (your???? f*ckin please!) tax money went? You don't get a choice, that's why it's called TAX.
You advocate slavery, theft and murder, based on race, sex and sexual orientation.

The one company I used to work for got rid of a bunch of white workers and hired all black and hispanic workers to replace them as part of their committment to diversity and racial equality. They gave promotions to minorities to avoid being sued for discriminating against them. They fired whites quickly yet were hesitant to ever fire a black worker. The PC laws encourage racism and sexism against the majority.
PC ideas will never work because they aren't based on reality. I read someone that one race was more likely to be turned down for loans than another race. They forget to mention that race had lower credit scores from not paying their bills. Income varies among races but studies have shown the difference is due to IQ. Races with lower than average IQs earn less than average but the same as people of other races who have the same IQ as them. For example, the average black IQ is 85. The average income of blacks is the same as the average income of whites with an IQ of 85. However, white IQ is higher so whites earn more than blacks. The only way to make incomes equal between races is to discriminate against white people so that blacks with IQ of 85 earn the same as whites with an IQ of 105.
The reason I hate political correctness is because they have to be racist and sexist to achieve their goals.
Where I live we've had a lot of controversy with politcal corectness over the past few weeks. First, the rabbi at the local Chabad was ordered to move his giant menorah from in front of city hall to a vacant lot three days before Channukah. Eventually, the day before the holiday, the ruling was overturned only because thousands of invitations had already been sent out. The next day, the president of the jewish federation of the local area demanded that a manger scene at town hall in the neighboring area be taken down. She retracted her claim a day later, amidst accusations that she only did it for revenge on the menorah. The next day, these Muslim people but up a star and crescent next to a CHristmas Tree and Menorah in a vacant lot.
As for my opinion, I think that political corectness is ridiculous. Can't people just enjoy things without worrying about it? However, in the above case, seperation of church and state should be maintained, however, as long as there is a Christmas Tree on Capitol Hill, I say let all religious symbols be allowed to be erected on government property.
Are you kidding? Macs are the only computers that give you a choice whether to run Windows or Apple OS.
Supposedly Macs can run Windows faster than any PC.
It's all true. And I can't stand the PC crowd. It's why I always get banned from websites and kicked out of stores.

This is known as the tyranny of the majority. Just because a majority thinks smoking should be banned is no excuse to take away the minority's rights. If the majority was in favor of re-instituting slavery, would that make it right to do so?
No.
Is slavery cruel and nasty? Yes.
Don't compare banning smoking to slavery.
I am not the biggest fan of democracy myself, but in some cases the majority are right on certain issues.
The masses are as a whole, ineffective at deciding day to day policy. Many different sub-groups and factions, all with different views.

I don't see what is so important about smoking anyway, why defending an habit that is nothing but harmful to one self and to others around in the first place? I would agree 100% with you, if the individual who smokes is the only one affected, but it isn't.
