I think the term 'Mary Sue' implies inserting ones' self in the action...'self insertion' calls to mind some anatomical impossibilities... But after seeing some of the examples so far, I'd think someone, somewhere, is typing away at that, too...
I have the strangest reaction to bad fanfic...I just stop and look at another one... But mainly I just read the
Enterprise and Other Star trek sections of Fanfiction.net.

But after seeing some of the examples so far, I'd think someone, somewhere, is typing away at that, too...Well, that was the original definition of the term, but it's been expanded on significantly since the character that inspired it appeared (she appeared in a Star Trek fanfic in the 60s, which was an intentional parody of the self-insertion stories of the time), and now it includes more than just the standard author avatar character. Here are a few examples of common Mary Sue traits from TVTropes.org (click them in order to be taken to a more in-depth explanation of each term):

I was searching ff.net for films that I have seen recently and characters. I searched "general thade" off planet of the apes tim burton version (lol trust me watch that). Anyway, I wish I didn't search him now, people just shipped the hell out of thade an ari and it was nothing but romances between the characters. Also thade was made out to be not as evil as he seems and all that s**t.
I saw one f****d up story where I had to stop a third of the way through because I was like . Another thade/ari thing, but this time thade was snogging ari and stuff and ew ew ew ew ari was reluctant ew ew ew.
Seriously out of all the films they could of chose, they decide to ship characters from that one!! NOOOOOO, its f*****g weird.
