The cries of a newborn baby pierced the cool air one early Spring morning twenty-three years ago, five weeks before they were supposed to. This was the first dent that little Amy made upon the world. She was thrust onto the unsuspecting populace of Port Jefferson, New York; a small, whisper-filled village. It would only be eleven or twelve years into her life before the young Amy would be aware of such whispers, for it was in elementary school that they began to be about her. First, from the lips of white-coated doctors and a psychologist--one lilting, deceiving English accent--and then, from her classmates, whose cruelty and malice knew no bounds. Middle school and high school proceeded in similar order, the torment never ceasing. It was only upon leaving this place and beginning anew on a small college campus 250 miles away that our heroine would find any peace. Friendships blossomed, a romance began (and ended, with all the grace of the Hindenberg explosion). The days melted away with a swiftness that frightened Amy, for who knew what lurked beyond the cap and gown? Then--Fate! One cross-country trip, and she had found her mission. Into the exciting, terrifying breach she went, to continue her journey; which, through many exuberant highs and terrible lows, has taken a new turn, leading her right back to where it all began.
I know that that's more than 40 words, but damn it, I'm a writer, I just can't contain myself.
