I can see why people who abuse steroids get so crazy.

I'm taking large quantities of steroids because of a severe allergenic reaction to the uriole oil in poison ivy. I thought I had gotten rid of it and ran into it while weeding. I didn't notice it soon enough to get it all off before my immune response was triggered. Apparently there is some kind of T-Cell mega overload thing going on so the Prednisone and other steroids are supressing my whole immune system to keep it from spreading and to make it go away.

They gave me a large dose via a harpoon, that's what it felt like anyway, and then sent me home with two weeks worth of pills. Wow, this stuff is making me feel really Wonky and extra talkative (very scary).

I'm going to try to take all measures possible not to get into this mess again. This can't be good for my body.

Prescribed steroids is basically a crapshoot. I know one of my doctors told me that they only prescribe them as a last resort and hope it's a cure-all. Yeah, really. 8O I've been on prednisone a couple times, and it only made me cranky and eat like a pig while curing nothing.

Steroids, (or more specifically "glucocorticoids," since steroids include other kinds such as anabolic steroids) have hundred of effects on the body, and there is a known phenomenon called "steroid psychosis." I think it takes a huge amount to get to that point, though. But it is "the" stress hormone, so I guess it makes sense that it makes people feel weird or wired.

They have hundreds of effects; I read somewhere they've even found that glucocorticoids have been found to activate certain genes (not the "turn into werewolf" or zombie ones, hopefully). Increases blood pressure, blood sugar, suppresses immune response, affects mood, suppresses natural adrenocortical function, promotes breakdown of muscle and increase in fat, and a bunch more. It's also implicated in some brain changes caused by PTSD.

But yeah they are tough on the body. OTOH, they can be life saving in the right context.

I've never tried it, but I've heard of local anesthetic in a lotion (like sunburn relief aloe type stuff) can sometimes help make a rash more bearable.

Look what OJ Simpson did to his wife, back in 1994.

I was diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency, meaning I didn't produce a certain hormone. The prescribed treatment it taking hydrocortisone (a steroid). I took a lot of it for a long time..besides the point, we aren't sure if I have adrenal insufficiency, but I'm off the steroids. I've gained so much weight :ncool: But not taking them, I don't have as many headaches and my temperature regulation is getting back to normal, and I guess my immune system isn't so suppressed anymore.
