Life's a beach.

Have I spelt that right?

The Birmingham City Council hit on a bright idea, which would be for the benefit of all. They put a beach in the city centre plaza, outside the big Victorian art galley. No, this was not the latest example of Post Modern art, it was a place where the city workers could go to relax. They could buy a drink at the beach hut, then plough through the sand, getting it into shoes and socks. The leaden sky matched the grey stone of the buildings, a north wind whipping over the plaza, bringing a promise of rain. Then it hits you. There is one consolation, you can choose any one of those deck chairs, the beach is all yours.

So how was it some great thinker on the City Council dreamt this up? Perhaps they had an end of year surplus of money to spend. Couldn't you have thought of better things to do with it. Even more amazing, is how did this idea pass through a committee?

If you had that money how would you have spent it for the common good, so everybody could benefit?

Mick, thinking about the logistics of moving that sand, let alone buying it, maybe a CAT scanner. But is the city council repsponsible for that?

Seriously, if there was a surplus, I'd give it back to the taxpayers.

If they don't spend every last penny, there might be budget cuts the next year. Waste more, want not.
