Just saw this. I get it.
https://themighty.com/2017/08/reading-taught-me-about-anxiety/

Quote:
So I read. I let my anxiety disappear between the pages so I can become the protagonist of a thrilling mystery or a peculiar romance. I try to find truth in imaginary people and made up events. I imagine I belong to worlds where people disappear into the ink on pages or where secret realms are hidden in wardrobes.

And sometimes, I find some amazing insight into my own life. I find quotes that help remind me of important things like imagination and being part of the present.

Reading certainly helps me relax. (Though I have to confess I don't understand the appeal of thrillers or romance. I enjoy a book that encourages you to take your time with it, not a "page-turner." That's probably why I'm a lit major. :p )

Reading has been a saving grace for me from early childhood - and it still is 7 decades on :)

More good news for we readers:

Neuroscientists at Emory University discovered that reading fiction can improve brain function on a variety of levels. They found that becoming engrossed in a novel enhances connectivity in the brain and improves brain function. Reading fiction was found to improve the reader's imagination in a way that is similar to muscle memory** in sports.

Yes! :)

This link talks about AS people and writing - and I suspect many AS readers are writers in one way or another - they tend to co-exist:

Reading certainly improved my life. It inspired me to go back to school, get a degree and pursue my dreams.

... I'm working on that last point. :(
