Candy and sugar do taste different to children. children usualy like sugar more than adults do, which could be why people associate it with youth. Alot of people had happy childhood moments with candy.
I heard that as a person ages, their taste buds become more numb to certain spices, and the sugar seems to get sweeter tasteing. That could also have something to do with it, I guess. Strange how that works, but I noticed this in my parents, my own mouth, and especialy my Grandfather who loves extremly over cooked cabage. (I'm not exagerating about "overcooked")
He and my father wouldn't touch candy, but my mother and I love dark chocolate. Of course these guys used to love candy as children. Especialy my Grandfather, who couldn't get candy very often, since his family worked so hard as farmers. I still like a variety, but lean toward sugar free more often than not. Eating it doesn't seem to have the same motives. I used to be a real lover of white chocolate. Now it just tastes too much like powdered sugar mixed with cream.
