"The company was gay. We'd turn night into day."

Why the gay part?

Because it rhymes with day.

Also, the company was happy, we partied all night is essentially what that line is saying. They were happy because they stayed up all night having fun.

"The company" (as in "the folks we were hangin with) were "gay" (as in "joyful/happy/carefree").

Not "the corporation was homosexual" (well...the GOP thinks that "corporations are people" so why couldnt a private company have a particular sexual orientation?) if thats what you thought that it meant.

Do the younglings really not know that "gay" used to just mean "happy", but it ended up being used as slang for "homosexual" for some reason?

It's kind of like when "dumb" used to just mean "mute" and "lame" used to just mean "unable to walk".

And yet people still say, "Don we now our gay apparel" when they sing "Deck the Halls" at Christmastime without really thinking about it. It basically means, "Let us put on our fancy clothes"

Quote:
The Theme of Loneliness

While the song’s lyrics are often interpreted as a romantic ballad, a closer look reveals a deeper theme of loneliness.  The protagonist wakes up to find that not only is there no milk, but his love has left him as well.  The line “No milk today, it seems a common sight, but people passing by don’t know the reason why” is a reference to the protagonist’s loneliness being something that is hidden from others.  The song paints a picture of a man who is alone and has lost something that he relies on.  The line “No milk today, it wasn’t always so, the company was gay, we’d turn night into day” suggests that the protagonist was once happy but has now lost the joy in his life.
