My friend Glenn recently quit the service along with his wife Maureen and my neighbor Anita!! !

Then I decided to Google if this was indicative of a larger issue with Meta (Facebook)/Facebook Messenger and sure enough the popularity has SIGNIFICANTLY dropped over the years!

I myself have also contemplated quitting the service because I think honestly it's a waste of time where you could be doing something more productive but right now it's the only way I can talk to my fiance David so I can't

What could be driving this trend?

So that might be why my brother hasn't seen or replied to my messages I sent him via Facebook messenger three weeks ago. He's been on Facebook since. So he must have deleted his messenger for some weird reason.

It's hard to use. It doesn't work for me half of the time.

Quit facebook entirely, became a toxic wasteland (right before stating they would 'stop' filtering posts  as if they bothered).

Hmm...it is a mystery...

I just deleted Facebook Messenger on my Kindle tablet and have dropped down to only using it on my iPod!! !

I wonder if people are abandoning Messenger but still retaining their Facebook accounts?

If that's the case then perhaps Facebook Messenger might be dying a slow death?!?

Glenn did NOT quit Facebook Messenger, he just stopped responding to me because of all of my repetitive questions

I copied your question into DuckDuckGo to see what came up, and the results are were interesting.
There were several results if anyone is interesting.

Meta and their products have a really bad reputation in geek communities. I think it's all the non-geeks who don't see a reason to leave. I talk to all my family and friends in Signal these days, with a very few stubborn stragglers in Whatsapp - they are unwilling to install Signal. I talk to absolutely nobody in Facebook, or FB Messenger.

There's a strong consensus in the Infosec community that Signal is the best for privacy these days.

I don't see the point of using Facebook Messenger anymore, so I no longer use it.
