I hear a lot about people pretending to have disorders, and although it seems a confusing concept (imagining why someone would do that, why someone would want attention, why someone would want that kind of attention in particular, and then wondering how do you tell if someone is pretending or not) I believe it's very possible.

The things people will lie about are incredible (I know a few liars... seemingly compulsive liars... and I must confess that I am often taken in by them until I notice inconsistencies and then analyse the situation). I suppose attention is a likely motive, although I do not understand why people are driven by such a strong desire for attention.

I also do not understand how having Asperger's is meant to attract attention? Literally stimming, perhaps, but surely that would mostly be negative attention? And online it must be even harder to use it to get attention?

I do not understand because the only attention mentioning Autism etc would appear to get mostly is negative due to there being so many misconceptions about it... I mean, surely pretending to have something physical would be more likely to get that kind of attention ?

It's called Histrionic disorder, and though I can imagine such people claiming to be aspies, it seems somehow much more fitting for them to get the desired attention by making a big deal about their histrionic disorder. Unless of course they also happen to be pathological liars.

Anyone who would do that deserves our sympathy anyway. They must have something wrong with them.

In order to really answer your question, don't we need at least one positive example? That means we need some of you fake aspie attention whores (I know you're out there!) to FESS UP. Come on, FESS UP! Purge your soul of the LIE you've shrouded yourself in! You KNOW who you are! You can FEEL the lie festering at the very core of your soul, like an infected mosquito bite on your naughty bits... Confess! CONFESS!! !

So you're saying that your doctor is incompetent? Hmm. I did read recently about a problem with AS being over-diagnosed. I'm sorry to hear about that.
