Why do people eat meals together? I much prefer eating on my own, if you eat with other people you get distracted by them talking etc.

I think an emoticon monster just threw up on the thread.

Anyways, I prefer to eat alone. That way no one pesters me with silly questions such as "what's wrong?" or "what are you staring at?"

I stare off into space when I'm eating. Leave me alone!

I eat meals with my sons in order to correct their table manners in the forlorn hope that if they can be taught to conduct themselves at table in a civilised fashion, we will be able to marry them off more quickly.

I generally eat alone and not by choice. I like to cook, and I would love to share what I create with someone else, but it rarely works out that way. I hate being alone and when there's an empty place across the table from me I almost break down and cry.

I always prefer to eat alone, as well. I eat very slowly and cut everything very carefully, so eating in front of people is only stressful for me. I suppose that to normal people it's nice because they like being social. I've found that a lot of families tend to have the dinner table as a place to catch up with what the other people are up to, to then proceed to their own activities after the meal. I've taken the habit of taking my food with me to another room, personally.

I'm ok with either. Eating with my family is ok if my father isn't in a mood, and if I eat alone I can relax and forget about table manners.

I like eating with family, but not with weirdos.

I agree.

Eating is largely a social occasion; things are so fast-paced anymore, it's nice to take some time out of the day and sit down as a family.

I like to see my family, to eat with them, to see how they are. You can't do that if you eat on your own. Otherwise you hardly ever talk to each other in the same place, at the same time.

I agree and disagree here, I would love to eat alone more than I do, because I am fairly conscious about how I eat and want to be vocal about how others eat. Conversely, I sometimes need to interact, and odd mealtimes are the only times. After family meals I tend to go back to being alone, anyway.

I love going out to eat with my family and friends, if we plan it in advance. Then I know that it's more about the socializing than the food (though sometimes it's about both :)).

But when a flatmate knocks on my door wanting to eat dinner with me right then, I don't appreciate it because even if I'm hungry, I'm not prepared to socialize on the spot. Like you said, Android, sometimes I just want to enjoy my meal without being distracted by conversation.

It's difficult to know what to say on the spot isn't it? So easy to say something that might offend or otherwise cause you to lose a friend or job and so difficult to speak things correctly that it is just easier to stay quiet.

I don't like eating around other people. I'm just too self conscious.
