I just finished Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton Porter and am currently working on Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. It's very interesting to compare the two stories. Austen wrote in the early 1800's and Porter in the early 1900's and they both talk about the plight of women who have no "male protector." Of the two I like Porter's heroine Elnora much better. She is not passive like Austen's heroines who are waiting for an eligible man to marry them. Despite all the obstacles others set in her way, Elnora is determined to get a higher education. She goes out into the Limberlost Swamp--alone!--and gathers moths and cocoons to sell to collectors; and she also ends up teaching nature education to local students. She also falls in love, but I get the impression that if she hadn't, she would have been just as content to be like her mentor, the mysterious Bird Woman who never married. Comparing the two makes me very glad that I live in a time where there are more opportunities for women.
I am not sure what I will read next, I have very eclectic reading habits and will read almost anything. How I find things is by roaming through the library stacks and picking up whatever strikes me as being interesting. If anyone is keeping track of my reading list (I understand that that is one of the things the infamous Patriot Act allows) they are probably going crazy trying to figure me out. Ha, ha, it's Aspergers!
