A few decades ago I was in the Army. What drove me absolutely berserk was NOISE. Especially loud stereos. Other kinds of noise, ones that had a purpose, I accepted (and used earplugs). The loud stereos I got into many a fight over. As I won each one, the music turned into blissful quite. Don't worry, I was in Light Infantry, we were expected to fight....so long as no one needed to be hospitalized.

I just tune it out, by day dreaming. I'm addicted to day dreaming, but this makes me tremendously clumsy or spatially unaware. Which sucks because sometimes you do lots of clumsy things like a bull in a china shop.

Often I can tune it out, I spend a lot of time blocking noise around me and mentally muting it (and frequently thus do not hear when people address me). If it's so bad I can't tune it out (often at work if other people are getting noisy) I listen to music on my headphones... the kind that cover the ears, they block more noise. I wear them sometimes when I'm not listening to music at my desk too, just to muffle things further and so people will assume I can't hear them if they call me and I don't respond.

Sometimes, if it's really bothering me, I also just leave the area if there are a lot of noisy people to return after they have calmed down and I have collected myself.

Earplugs are good too... more when sleeping. They don't block all noise but they muffle it. The silicon waxy ones are best.

Obviously, if it's something you can end I do that too. Aside from loud clamourous noises like many people talking, whiny electronic noises really bug me. There used to be a light over my desk that would start making this noise, and I kept a long poking device nearby to wack it whenever it happened, which would usually cause it to stop.

I hate the noise of a hoover with a passion! :(
The sound of it makes me want to lash out at it  so I now make sure I'm out of the house when my Mum wants to hoover

A lot of time I put cotton wool in my ears if the TV is too loud or if I'm trying to sleep and I can hear noise etc.

tuning out and planning ahead when I can.

I always have my ipod and in-ear earbuds on me and they come on handy for everyday spontaneous noises when I walk to school/downtown.
I never get on public transportation without them. Even if my ipod is dead, the earbuds muffle the noise.

In planning ahead...The #1 noise I hate is the sound of bathroom fans, so I plan ahead so I don't have to use public bathrooms with them. Also,I make it a habit of knowing when there is a scheduled drill, alarm, etc.

Little things go a long way.
