I do find most jokes hard to understand and can take things literally or misunderstand what people say quite often (although I get sarcasm for the most part)

I have written and performed stand up comedy and I really struggle with other people's 'jokes' :!:

I had to be taught humor as a kid. My jokes made no sense, but now I get most jokes and sometimes sarcasm. Subtle sarcasm I dont get. As far as you thinking that you might have austistic traits but not the real deal, autism is a spectrum disorder. On one end you have folks who are non-verbal coupled with M.R. on the other end you have folks who are freakin' geniuses who have a hard time relating with other people and there is a great middle in between. I suggest that you get a neuropsych evaluation done by someone experienced with autism. This person can also draw up a personalized socialization plan that will help with the difficulties you have with social interaction. No, autism cannot be cured, but you can learn how to dance a little better with two left feet with enough practice.
Socializing is like rhythm...n/t's come by it natrually, we on the other hand have to think our way through the music missing the beats.

I can only speak for myself here, but my personal understanding of what it means to be autistic, based on my own experience is that I just don't have an innate human-to-human connection with other people. At times I have felt that I haven't got a clue how to speak to another human being. This makes me quite fearful of other people. It makes it hard for me to see myself as a person. I was diagnosed with AS in my early forties, after a lifetime of feeling there was something very wrong with me. and feeling not really part of the human race because I felt so abnormal and so different to other people.
