I lunched mostly alone in the cafeteria for half a year when I was at another university (at home I don't eat at a cafeteria). I was kinda sad if people just completely ignored me when I thought they liked me, but I otherwise didn't care.

Also, if you think about it, this song is only not hurtful if people actually think he wanted to be left alone. And that was clearly not the case. If the kid did feel that lonely (and the tears do seem to indicate he did) then there was no reason to sing about it. It should've been about friendship, nothing else.

To be honest, the entire show acted as if it was some huge favour of the guy to become the kid's friend. I sincerely hope that his mother talked him into it and that he's not just doing it to show off how nice he is.

I had an entirely different thought when I heard it. Is it really that hard for some people to believe that some of us might just be sitting alone because we like it that way? That automatic assumption that we must be sad, lonely puppies in need of rescue just pisses me off.

I think the little boy had a similar idea and hence remarked that the song was too sad. The song simply is not accurate.

There's that too. I don't know how many times I've had to tell people to go away because I was taking my lunch time as a much needed break from people, but they insisted that I was lonely. Luckily people don't do that in college.

Exactly. NT's just don't get it. I've had people sit with me at lunch, and I absolutely hated it.

I sit with lots of guys. They ignore me, and it drives off most NT girls. A win-win situation. :)

I would hate it too. The question I ask is, does this kid hate it? He didn't look like he hated it to me. I thought the theme music went overboard, so did the Miracles Can Happen song, but what if the kid thought it was awesome? If you asked him and he said it was awesome, what then?

The kid didn't say anything. That's why I made my original comment about NT's playing their NT games. It's like they're completely oblivious.

If the kid really hated the whole ordeal, he wouldn't have been there in the first place or he would have been complaining about how much he didn't want to be there.. When I was that age, no one could talk me into doing something like that if I absolutely didn't want to. Maybe my mother would have tried to get me to do it, but I would have complained right there on camera and said "I want to go home." or something like that. If this kid did say that, it was edited out. They did go overboard, probably because it was a Christmas show, but it might not be completely negative for the kid, is all I'm saying. If the popular kid is a good friend and they get along, that's great.

I don't understand why they felt the need to tell the world about how great that guy was for being friends with an autistic. It may not be very common for NTs to try to befriend us autistics but it is NOT something new that has never happened before. It's something anyone could of done & lots have done in the past so Why did that guy need to get special attention for it? I bet it's because he's on a sports team

Because they want to encourage other kids to do what he did. It's not a totally bad idea when you think about it. Maybe he hopes this will encourage kids to be inclusive with one another.

So it's a "miracle" that a kid with Asperger's can make a friend?

Or a miracle the jock was nice enough to befriend the child with autism.

That. Was. Horrible.

I would be completely humiliated if I was that kid. If I were him I wouldn't have been able to handle that. Especially at around 9:22 when the kid said that the song was sad and everyone laughed at him. That was horrible. :(

The song sucked too.

This is one of the meanest things I've seen in a long time.

I almost cried watching that too...God that was painful.

I would rather be stranded in a desert and forced to drink my own urine before I watch that again.

I was confused by that reaction. Graham thought the song was sad and they all laughed. Why would they react like that? I couldn't tell if they were actually laughing at him or just laughing because they didn't know what to say or what. It was loud and annoying.

I thought it was odd they were laughing loudly like maniacs around a kid who probably has sensory issues.

I'm still not sure about their reaction either. I looked at it again. I don't think they were intentionally trying to be mean.... :? Maybe for some reason they thought that he was joking? Or maybe they thought it was cute that he didn't seem to like the song immediately? I don't know.

It was loud and annoying though.

I think, but am not sure, that they were laughing because it was "obvious" that it was a sad song, and that his statement that it was sad was a joke. Stating the obvious in a deadpan way-->funny. Not sure about it, though. Awfully loud, too.

I can't make out who exactly are laughing. I really hope his friend and mother didn't.
