My obsession is a musical instrument, so people can't be upset with me for being obsessed with it. Take that, society!

As a kid, yes. But not anymore as an adult. I tried very hard to keep my Sonic obsession a secret from my mom but she somehow found out. I've never been that good at keeping obsessions a secret for that long anyway. My mom was never mean about my obsessions like some people she just claims she would go crazy from hearing about meerkats for the umpteenth time. She needed breaks from me talking about them and it made me feel as if my feelings didn't matter. I don't think I've gotten any scorn from anyone for my Sonic obsession, but that's probably because I've tried so hard to keep it secret and on the internet I only talk about it with other Sonic fans. I also don't have tempter tantrums because Sonic's eyes are green now or because Ryan Drummond isn't voicing him anymore. So compared to many Sonic fans, I'm probably considered "sane". The only problems my parents had with my Sonic obsession was my sudden desire for a pet hedgehog and another animal that would have to eat and go to the vet. Anyway, ever since I turned 21, no one really gives me any trouble about my obsessions anymore.

Just a few thoughts:

I wonder how many people who made a living out of their obsession were disenfranchised when a trade or craft became obsolete ? It seems like such a phenomenon would effect people with autism far more than the general population. How easy would it be to replace your primary interest/obsession IF you made a living from IT ?

No, they just think my interest in table-top RPGs ranges from "silly" to "weird".

Some people do, but I still don't understand why. What's wrong with being into music and DJ'ing? Most people say there's nothing wrong with it... but some still give me grief for it. I don't get it.

All the time. A third grader reading all she can about cardiac diseases and neurodegenerative disorders is not what you expect from a person that age, ESP when she does it all the time.
