Never was really into heavy metal, more the classic, hard rock type myself.
Seriously though, maybe there is a sort of tie in to people who bang their heads at a concert. Extreme stimulation? Seems plausible at least..
Interestingly, I have known people with severe toothaches to engage in this.

Sincerely,
Matthew

I've done that under extreme stress/very depressed. I started to feel as though I was going to fall apart and it would hold me together, like there had to be pressure/pain on the outside to match what was on the inside.

Only when I'm really upset do I do that, usually I hit things first. Overstimulation can be another thing, there are so many things happening and you just want it to stop its a reaction I don't know why but first thing I do is cover my ears or want to bang my head

It happens for examples in a shutdown, when I cannot find words anymore and there is this weird feeling spreading all over and the body is just "taking over", and it doesn't need to be only head banging but the body itself getting hit, but it is no more a conscious action taking place and it is this frustration that you cannot talk to a person at that moment, because the mind has shut down and is "blanking", but you want to communicate.
Secondly external sensory overload.
