An estimated 50,000 people have autism in Scotland today. Around 535,000 people have autism in the UK and over 2 million people are affected by the disability.

Using these figures, with the populations of Scotland and UK as a whole being 5 million
and 55 million respectively, that makes it 1 % have autism (1 in 100). The figure for AS/HFA I read somewhere was in the region of 1 in 325 (0.3 %) . Presume the percentages will be similar for US and elsewhere but it must be difficult in general to estimate AS due to the amount of ppl who are self diagnosed or indeed oblivious to the condition, like I was until this year.
Hope my arithmetic is correct,I had to think about the calculations and will now go
and lie down for 5 minutes to recover.
How do you figure? At .3% it would require about 17billion people to have 20million since the vast majority of AS people are caucasion and only about 1/3 of the worlds population is caucasion.
Oh well, even 20million is kind of small. That is probably less than half the population of scandinavia, or just about twice the number of people in New York. That IS based on old figures, but they are probably still somewhat close.
Still, this means the average school I went to had like 1 to 3 people with AS. Counting me, I guess I wasn't likely to find anyone anyway.

Possibly. I'd always assumed the 0.3 number was global.

Half of Scandinavia is closer to 12m.
Sweden: 9m
Finland: 5.2m
Norway: 4.6m
Denmark: 5.4m

Yeah, being in a school of hundreds where the real possibility of you being the only Aspie sucks. I didn't even know I was Aspie until well into old age (28) so I didn't just have to tolerate all those bozos as a kid but had no idea WTF was up with them (or myself) or proper support.
