I was very surprised when the old man compared his wife having AS with being an alcoholic, when he said
Quote:
It's, umm, 'Okay you know something about yourself now, you know, but where's the accountability for it? It's like I'm putting up with, with somebody who just, you know can do and be anything they want, and then I have to just deal with it." It's-it's like me being an alcoholic, drinking. If I was just out getting drunk every night coming back, then I say "Well you'll just deal with it," and I don't think that's fair for some reason.
Someone who has such a fundamental lack of understanding of what autism is should not be married to someone who is autistic.
His understanding is backward. His speech is as if neurotypicals are often asked to be accommodating. Throughout life, autistic people are taught to try to match neurotypical behavior, and are constantly berated for failing to exactly do so. Not fundamentally changing your perception is not a failing. Demanding that someone fundamentally change their perception is unreasonable, and is abusive.
