It never occurred to me to hate Sheldon. He's such an idiot. He takes social pratfalls. I like it that he's smarter than everybody and yet can't do the simplest social interaction. He's an inverted Lucille Ball.

I don't see why aspies can't happen to be arrogant at times. Sure, it's not a symptom, but we aren't predisposed not to be. We're not all one person, and individually, we all have our shortcomings, and many of them have absolutely nothing to do with aspergers.

I don't think there is any character trait, good or bad, which Aspies can't have.
Who said by the way that they hated Sheldon? I always thought he was one of the if not actually the most popular character on the show.
About that his pride is supposed to be a defense-mechanism, I think so too, because for example there's this scene actually if you remember where Penny says to him that he always seems so confident and he answers that he's not.

Hollywood thinks audiences are too stupid to notice that Sheldon is just a stereotype of AS people. However, Jim Parsons is the only reason why I watch The Big Bang Theory.

@ Demon 007: I absolutely agree with you about Aspies being selfish. Even though many AS people exhibit stereotypical behavior associated with AS, people with AS are people too just like NTs.

@ Jensen: I agree with you about the show as a whole. The Big Bang Theory does have its flaws, but viewers really need to lighten up and understand that The Big Bang Theory is just a comedy show and not reality TV.

Agree, it is just a comedy and never was said or implied that Sheldon Cooper has autism.

I am more annoyed with the fact that a lot of high IQs characters on TV series are portrait as socially inept. Of course this happens with other character types as well. One other serie that comes to mind is "Scorpion".

I don't think it's just Sheldon, it's become fairly popular to hate on that show. Just about any time it's brought up, the conversation spirals into how terrible and stupid the show is. Don't get me wrong it's got it's problems, but people calling it "black face for nerds" is a bit much.

@ Erwin: I'm a huge fan of Scorpion and although Walter does have a high IQ on the show, it is never implied how socially inept Walter actually is, especially when he interacts with Paige. Like The Big Bang Theory, Scorpion is just another show on CBS and not reality TV.

I don't hate Sheldon. I just like to see bad things happen to him.

I enjoy Sheldon as a character on a TV show. I probably would not get along with him in real life. I like his relationship with Penny but I don't like the way Sheldon treated his assistant, Alex.

Penny is rather Aspie-like herself. I think she's a good foil for Sheldon. She is frequently unhappy, though, because Sheldon doesn't really perceive her needs.

I like Penny's dry sense of humor and she does seem to accept Sheldon for who he is.

TIME OUT! Penny is the pretty blonde married to Leonard. You guys are referring to Amy Farrah Fowler, I think.

I meant their friendship. As the years go by, they seem closer and closer in a non-romantic way. Part of the reason Penny may be fond of Sheldon is that she does not feel smothered by him.

Yep....Wrong girl!

Penny is a nice NT-type girl. I don't think she likes Sheldon--but she feels a little sorry for him.

I know, blond pretty girl played by Kaley Cuoco. I think Penny has a genuine fondness for Sheldon in the later episodes. In the episode "The Closure Alternative" (near the end of the episode) from the 6th season Penny tells Sheldon she loves having him in her life.

I am not a huge fan but did like the first season (haven't seen more). But Paige her job is to "She works to help the team interact with normal people and learns from O'Brien that her son is not challenged but really a genius.". She sometimes tells Walter he made a social boo boo (faux pas) and often he doesn't understand what he did wrong.
