Do AS people not use their sub-conscious?
You guys are locked in a set of false mental constructs and assumptions that have you totally trapped. Wake up!
Who's not in this world ?
And, more inportant, who cares if they are true or false (I'm convinced that they're true), as long as they allow me to be happy and function well in the world ?
This is valid for every single person, NT or AS, it's just psychology.

For instance balancing as we walk along is done sub-consciously, but counting out money is done consciously.
Do you think AS tendency people try to do things consciously, that are better left to the sub-conscious?
e.g. when talking with someone, an AS person may be thinking 'what does that expression mean? where have I seen it before?' and 'what should I do or say now?', whereas if he/she didnt think in that way (systemise) then he/she would find they could instead just 'feel' their way through the conversation; 'feeling' what the other person was thinking and feeling, feeling where the fun could be in this conversation, etc..
Now, you SEE, you really have just ******NO******* idea what you are talking about, etc.... Of course, if your statements HERE weer true, it would be MORE evidence you systemizing garbage is garbage! YOU JUST CAN'T WIN!! !! !! !!
Some AS people DO balance CONSCIOUSLY! I do sometimes! Some count SUBCONSCIOUSLY! I do sometimes!
Do you even know the difference?
I ALSO drive to work SUBCONSCIOUSLY! I start planning the day sometimes almost SUBCONSCIOUSLY!!
SO, do AS people do somethings SUBconsciously? OF COURSE! HECK, savantism is generally created because they have like a program that runs behind the scenes, SUBCONSCIOUS! Don't believe me? ASK THEM how they do it. THEY DON'T KNOW!
And don't go saying it is magic, or instinct!

thanks your thoughtful and sensible comments. Quick parting thoughts;
My driver, the monkey I am trying to get off my back, is that my life is way, way better than 2 months ago. Maybe I was not AS, but the symptoms etc (see Introdn page of my site) seem very like it to me and others. If I was an NT with social problems I don't see why they should have suddenly cleared - but maybe that is the case, and perhaps I'll try and hold onto that thought, even if I don't really believe it, because that will let me get this obligation off me.
On AS research some in the UK community are now hopeful a lot more govt funding will come, because AS prevalence appears to be increasing (1 in 200 etc) - maybe we should all re-double our efforts to convince politicians etc to release more funding.
I am still surprised that there is not a place on the web where new AS theses and ideas are discussed, and that even the 'Cure Autism' etc organisations seem to have no passion, no energy, no new ideas, to beat this thing.
all best to you

Have you actually read and thought about the research?
Or do you just like listening to sympathetic 'medical specialists' who don't want AS people to think they can get better because then they might actually get better and those medical practices and research centres would cease paying the specialists their salaries.
Have you considered stfu?
Your 'theories' are lame, you seem to have no clue.
I agree there's a danger of that. I'll disappear.
p.s. I would welcome any criticism of the scientific logic etc (on my Thesis page) if anyone has any - would be good to disprove it if it's not true.

Kosmonaut is RIGHT! And even RDOS will tell you his test does NOT prove you have AS! It merely helps to dispute it! You should try to see if you have symptoms that fit the DSM ****FIRST****! If you don't, you don't have it! If you DO, RDOSs test, patterned a bit after the AQ one, will help DISPUTE it if you don't.
It is almost like a court of law. They *****NEVER***** find anyone innocent! That is not their goal! They find people GUILTY! If you are not found guilty, they say they find you not guilty. You may LATER be found guilty!
As for the "trained as engineer"? BIG DEAL! AS people aren't really "trained as engineer"s! If they are, they are. They often studied THEMSELVES! BTW The fact that you were born to two engineers either indicates a genetic or environment component! You lose EITHER WAY! If it is genetic, you are wrong because it isn't learned. If it is environment than you don't match the profile, and are wrong that you have it.
BTW I started in electronics. NOBODY I knew was into electronics. My mother and father DID work for an electronic company(My mother as a bookkeeper, and father as a computer programmer) about 14 years AFTER I was born, and at least a decade AFTER I was into electronics. Other than that, NOPE! I was first interested in computers BEFORE I knew my father was. He and I rarely saw one another. BTW I NEVER learned RPG, only had a passing interest in JCL or 360/370, and COBOL was like the 4th or 5th language I learned. So my father and I didn't even study the same languages. BTW I learned all that stuff ON MY OWN!

That's not how it works. A common reason for one's consciousness to engage with a situation one is in is that one doesn't subconsciously understand the situation, and therefore needs to consciously investigate it. Like Girl7000 said, this subconscious understanding is often lacking in us Aspies. I certainly do use my subconsciousness a lot, but it is "systemizing" and not social; there is simply far more information than can be handled consciously and at any given moment there are only few things that need to be consciously thought about.
It's a bit silly to "fight" over how our minds work, though - our minds are not identical to each other, maybe not even very similar. (Similar traits may be there for dissimilar reasons.) I certainly don't have any sort of intuitive social understanding. I do have a small set of social responses that have become routine, hence intuitive for me, but these are there because in numerous experiences with social humans it turned out that these responses lead to desired results. I don't understand why these lead to desired results, though. This is because my brain is not social. I will never understand why people use language for reasons other than exchanging accurate information, or why they flock together with more than a few others for reasons other than resolving situations that can best be resolved through cooperation. Absence of socialness is very hard for NT's (and even some Aspies) to understand and accept; socialness permeates their mentality so thoroughly that they can't imagine a reality without it.

There is nothing that is uniquely and invariably human.
That's just what I was going to say. It's not that Aspies don't do stuff subconsciously, it's just that they have to "manually" think about SOME THINGS that NTs do subconsciously (since it's not automatic, or as automatic).
I balance subconsciously 99% of the time, and pretty much drive that way too. Annoying, when you're going somewhere different than work, and end up missing a turn off because you "automatically" just go to the regular spot
Why would you have to prove a subconscious? We do all kinds of things automatically "on autopilot" where we don't have to consciously think about every single step.
Heck, most of the time we BREATH subconsciously. No one needs to study if it exists (though I'm sure there has been all kinds of research into the subconscious.)
Regarding the thesis page on that web site:
I think that's totally bogus. And why would it even happen? I mean I suppose it's not outside the realm of possibility, but this would be more like saying someone can grow an extra arm to help them play tennis better.
1. I nick someone elses thesis.
2. Some BS about tennis playing
3. Some BS about turning off the brain.
I can't see any logic to pick, your nobel prize is in the post.
Amen.
I'm pro weird theories but there's no reason behind any of this crap it has no damn backbone of any sort.
I learned Kung Fu. My right side is stronger than my left side so I used it more.
Guess what that means.
My right side is stronger than my left side.
If I used my left side more my left side would get stronger.
The more you use something the stronger it gets, the more you know how to use it, ect. Thats like anything. Progress. Doesn't develop differently.
Guess in your theory my left leg is Neurotypical while my Right leg has AS.
Lol. We need to give our brains tennis lessons guys.
I'll get right on that.
Yes, I do lots of things on intuition and subconsciously. I just don't communicate or socialize with NTs using instinct because I know from experience that it doesn't work. I do socialize and communicate with Aspies using intuition and it works very well. How does your model explain that JCJC?
I have not 'become an NT', I am just a better me.
You can't change the way your brain works. I tried hard before I knew about AS, and it FAILED! The most you can do is to develop some acting skills, think that you're becoming "more normal"; and therefore, lie to yourself and others. You'll still be the same inside...
Anyway, on the topic... I DO have a subconscious mind, and it works well... sometimes I become angry or happy without having an obvious stimulant... which I believe might be the work of my subconscious because it always does things without informing me about it.
I myself usually use my sub-conscious in social situations because I don't really care if I don't realise a lot of stuff and tell inappropriate things... however if I am told that I should behave properly I become very conscious and plan and control my every single movement.
Mushroom you say - "I become very conscious and plan and control my every single movement.' that's a great step forward, to be able to see yourself doing that; it seems not many AS people can see themselves doing that.
Rdos -I have no explanation for that one!! - what do you think?
I actually suspect this language we're trying here of 'conscious' and 'subconscious' is not quite accurate and therefore not that useful. The real issue is systemising or not, as above...
