I think the key is not having a lot of stuff. I only own four bowls (no plates). When they are dirty I put them in the fridge so the sink area stays clean and they don't attract bugs. Then when I feel like it, or have no clean bowls, I wash them. I only eat salads or other things that don't require cooking, like cereal, or nuts, so I rarely have dirty pots and pans.

Dirty clothes are in a pile in my closet, on the floor. They are out of sight until I do laundry, a little at a time. Clothes I am still wearing are on a chair in my bedroom. When someone comes over, I put a bedspread on the bed, otherwise I don't make the bed.

To clean the floor, I use a damp paper towel and run it mainly along the sides of the floor, where it meets the wall, where dust and hair tends to collect. I do it piecemeal, a bit now and then, a few times a week. Occasionally I will also use a damp paper towel to pick up dust from other parts of the floor, especially under furniture, and the tops of furniture, maybe once a month or less. Window sills I do rarely. I don't sweep or vacuum.

The only other things I clean are the bathroom and kitchen sinks (with Comet powder) at no particular time but when they look untidy, so maybe once every two weeks, and the toilet, which I clean with a spray all-purpose cleaner and a paper towel, for the outside parts, and a toilet brush for the inside of the bowl, about once a week, or more if needed.

I don't really have a lot of clutter, but I tend to just dump things randomly into drawers so they are out of the way, so my drawers are not very well organized. I also store things under my bed.

It may not sound like it, but my house is pretty clean. It's very small, though, less than 500 sq. ft.

Having someone come over once or twice a week is a good motivation to tidy up.

I love the feeling of being in a clean room but it feels impossible to keep my home clean. There's so many different things to keep track of. Sometimes it gets really bad

How do you keep your whole home clean? Do you have a system to help stay on top of it?

It's very difficult. I watched this video on Victorian servants [Link] and it just sounded so nice the way they do everything to keep things clean and spotless. This was not just for the rich, even middle class people had between 1 and 3 servents to clean their townhouses. You could leave them instructions like "ensure there is a basin of warm water in my room before I wake up". It sounds like having a super turbocharged version of Alexa.

That sounds very efficient, I like that. It must be doable if you've been able to stick with it for 45 years. Maybe I'll ask my partner if he'd like to try this method

Do you and your husband have different assigned tasks that you do during the clean up period? Or do you switch it up/just do what you feel like?

He does dusting, vacuuming and dumps the wastepaper/takes out the garbage, we did the dishes together back when, these days as retired people he washes dishes 4 days a week and I do 3. He does windows when they need it and mows the lawn and shovels snow. If I choose to plant flowers or decorative shrubs, etc, I maintain those myself, and kept a veggie garden in years past. In the days when we had to use a laundromat, we did that together too, now we have a washer and dryer at home.
I do laundry, the bathroom, and sweep the floors or mop ( he does carpet, I do hard surfaces). we both pick up stuff from each room, he picks up the stuff he has left around and I pick up mine.
