Nothing spectacular? A homeless, autistic genius, getting shot at? Left living in squalor, in one of the richest countries of the world? Not more than 10 miles from where the demi-god Prof Simon Baron-Cohen holds court at the Autism Research Centre? What counts as spectacular in your book? I take it you've got a roof over your head, and have never been on the wrong end of a gun..
Sounds just like home, except no shootings (at least not of autistic people - only gang-related), and no demi-gods down the road. Lots of squalour, though, lots of poverty, lots of indifference, in an even wealthier country.
Is he really homeless, though? He has a houseboat, does he not? With a door he can lock when he goes to sleep? Much safer than the actual street, even if it's a total dive. And he may not have any roaches, either. (Although I admit that my housing as bad as it is is much better than that. But still, a houseboat . . . it sounds like freedom to me.)
The bit about adverse reactions to drugs always makes me mad. I got pressured into taking Paxil back in the mid-90s and when I started to feel suicidal I stopped taking it, about 3 weeks in. My doctor was not impressed with me. I was not impressed with her back again, especially since she was a good doctor in so many ways.
