I was wondering whether others test high at the doctor's surgery (due to anxiety levels?). Blood pressure is usually tested after the dr has wanted to chat/small talk and then ask about what ails me.

Wouldn't elevated blood pressure in that situation be "normal" for such situations (especially when tested at home on an electronic unit I get a lower reading).

I am curious if anyone else has a similar experience.

I do.

My top and bottom numbers jump an average of 10 points in the office, they're fine on a consitant basis at home.

He's had the nurse take my BP at arrival, and it will be elevated about 5 points, 15-20 minutes later when he finally walks in to see me it's up another 5. He's tested with my machine for accuracy & his, mine is accurate. He still wants to medicate it and has suggested conseling for my "anxiety", I refuse, because at home my BP is always normal, and I've spent years on and off on the conseling route which did squat. I go out when I need to, I get things done, I keep my appointments, I just hate going out.

When I was younger (about 10) I had high blood pressure. My Dr. told my mom that it was from stress. Many times I have low blood pressure, mainly from not eating or drinking enough. If my blood sugar drops, so does my blood pressure. Sometimes it is normal, but usualy low.

Low-normal.

Last time I had it professionally tested, it was 114/68.

My doctor check mine every month, and it is usually 130/80 which, is a little high, but not high enough to worry about.(at least that's what she says) :)

This is a well recognised pattern. They call it "white coat effect" or something similar.

High, it's in the family, and I don't get enough exercise.

I don't believe my BP is high (maybe just slightly) by normal standards but I am on blood pressure tablets because one of my kidneys is atrophic & covered in cysts. It still works okay. High BP can cause problems for kidneys so I guess the tablets are mostly preventative.

I always thought it was low because of a slight tendency to faint in the family, I've fainted at the sight of blood a few times, or lack of fresh air can do it too.

Mostly my bp is unremarkable, though, saw a doctor 6 months ago and he said it was perfect, unusually perfect.

Mine's on the low end of normal. Low blood pressure runs in my family.

More remarkably, I seem to have quite a tolerance to low blood pressure. One night I had to go to the hospital after suffering heat stroke. After a few hours of IV hydration, I felt fine and ready to go home. But they wouldn't let me leave because my BP was too low.

I remember sitting up in bed looking at the monitor, which said that my BP was 50 / 22, and begging the nurses to let me go home. They let me go when it got up to 60 / 40 or something in that range.

Later, I learned that most people will be in a coma or even die if their BP is around 50 / 20. Apparently, it's extremely unusual to be fully alert and feeling healthy with that BP. I wonder what it is, physiologically, that makes me different.

Mine is normal, I think. My doc says I have a blood pressure like a 20 years old man. I eat a lot but have allways been rather skinny.

I've got anxiety problems, and I went to my doctor recently and he says my blood pressure is 'very good' (which I assume means completely normal) but my heart rate is a bit fast, particularly when I first came in and was nervous.

If you were going to the doctor about a physical illness, being ill can raise your blood pressure.

Mine is the low end of normal, as is the case with the other women on my mother's side of the family. I have to be careful not to stand up too quickly, and I have to get out of a hot bath in stages, or I pass out.

It was very low when I was pregnant, and I was having dizzy spells even when lying down. 8O

Slightly high. Mine's usually like 120-130 / 70-80 but it can go as high as 150/90 on a bad day for some reason. This is at the doctors office.
