I don't think there is a YMCA near me. I'd ideally like to live somewhere around here as it's where I feel most comfortable and where the people that help me live and work.

I have a BSc (Hons) degree in Computer Science. Before I was kicked out I was sort of planning to do a MSc. I still would like to do that, it's just I was unsure about how to go about it or whether it was feasible before, and my current situation has just confounded the issue.

You're doing really well with keeping your situation in perspective. So many good responses too. Ironically, right now, I am in the process of moving/relocating and have houshold stuff I want to get rid of - if I lived in the UK I'd give it to you. I think you'll find a place soon enough with your organized approach.

Thanks. I hope I find somewhere quickly but I think maybe the luck of what's available at the time is the limiting factor. That is to say, I hope there are good places available.

You have to have a license to own a TV in this country. No joke. I don't watch TV so I'd rather spend the money on an Internet connection anyway.

That's incorrect. You only need a licence if you watch or record TV programs as they are being shown on TV. If you only use your TV set to watch VHS tapes/DVDs and play video games, you don't need a licence.

So would it be the TV license people's responsibility to prove that you were watching TV channels with it? How would they do that?

An inspector knocks on your front door and asks to see inside your living room. You show him your TV and, as long as you don't have an aerial/cable/satellite dish, you won't have any problems.

You can call TV Licensing or look on their website and they'll tell you exactly the same thing.

Oh, OK. Sorry, I didn't know that.

That should open up many avenues of work where you can excel and your Aspieness will be an asset. Who cares if the tech guy is good at small talk when the computer system is a mess? What would you like to do with that degree? The Brittish system is very different to ours, and I think superior in many ways. We've dumbed things down so much we force kids to waste a lot of time. They graduate with few skills.

I think going back to school sounds good. If you can get additional funding to cover expenses while you learn to live alone it might be a good start as school is probably more familiar than work. By the time you finish that next degree you'll be pretty adept at the daily living stuff and ready to tackle coping in a work environment, maybe. You're obviously bright and talented. You've got good written language skills and can get your ideas across well at least in this format. Your reaction to all this, at least it seems via the internet, shows a great deal of emotional stability.

You seem to have a lot of assets on your side.

I knew there was something like that, and the liscense is pretty expensive compared to what's available to watch, or so I've heard. I've got several close friends who are brits but many of them have lived in the US for a long time. My best friend goes home a couple of times a year to see family and friends and comes back complaining about stuff like that. The internet seems like a better investment.

You can also watch movies if you have a DVD drive on your computer, or can download them, sometimes for a small rental type fee. If you do that then you can't mess around on the TV while watching the movie, he he.

Internet access is extremely important for me because that is where pretty much all my social interaction takes place. I only have one real-life friend and I'm not sure he's a very good one.

Henry,

I can't think of any other advice. The advice given so far has been outstanding! I just wanted to wish you good luck and strength during this transition.

I saw an episode of the Young Ones called bomb. The main characters ran afoul of the tv detector man and Vvian had to eat the tv set to keep from paying a fine or going to jail. He ate everything but the cord so they claimed it was a toaster. His pet hamster then plugged it into a power outlet shocking him. You do not get genious of this magnitude in american television sitcoms. I hope that cheered you up.

I am still living in the respite home. I have been looking for private flats but there basically aren't any. My support worker is filling out the forms for government housing at the moment.

I feel like I am on a bit of an emotional roller coaster. Some times I feel quite positive and upbeat, other times I feel extremely sad and lonely. My emotions vary a lot and sometimes I feel like I have no idea what is going on in my own head. I have meltdowns a huge deal more frequently at the moment.

My support worker said I will probably still be here for at least another 3 weeks so there isn't really any end in sight.

My mother emailed me today. I haven't responded and don't know if I should or what to say.

I'm glad to hear from you, and that you are relatively OK. It sounds like there are some definite options it's more a matter of how long it's going to take to get there. Maybe you can read some cookbooks while you wait?
