Respected, yes. Given special accolades as if it's doing something extraordinary? No.

Autism IS the ULTIMATE disorder because we know of no other that cuts to the core of our culture's scientific (or pseudo-scientific) understanding of what it is to be human.

I have heard this said by one of the more prominent American researchers into classic "savant" autism. I am not 100% sure its such a philosophical conundrum. The reason it's the ultimate disorder (if it actually is?) is because "low thinking" individuals (the vast majority of our fellow humans) are not interested in the question to begin with, i.e. why are we human. They are more interested in more mundane questions like how much money will I make, how do I get into that girl's pants.

I don't like the notion that all humans are similar. I believe autism/adhd/NT and psychopathy all have a place in human nature and survival. But seeing that most people believe we are all made to live in a society and has to function alike its not hard to see why it all gets dramatised.

Group psychology predicts that individual schemas we have about human similarity are overidden by group stereotypes about what it means to be "normal". The problem here is normality is hard to define given most NTs have a smorgasboard of mood induced behavioural fluctuations.
