Actually, it wastes neither if you put those plates in the sink, fill with hot water and dishwashing liquid, so the plates are submerged. Walk away and do something else. Then when you come back later, scraps are loosened, come off easily, the water has cooled down so you can put your hands in it to wash, and you only need a little bit of water to rinse. Even easier if you have two sinks where you fill the second with clean water for rinsing. Sounds like this would save water and electricity.
Hmm but then the sink would get dirty quicker and I would have to re-fill it a couple of times...If I do dishes I always change the water when it gets nasty. Then there's dishwashers which don't work to well if you leave food on the plates.

People who eat meals, and when they are done, there are scraps of food all over their plate. I don't mean if they can't finish the meal, I mean things such as rice, that they haven't bothered to scrape up, they just leave the bottom of the plate covered in little bits of food.
It just makes more work for the person doing the dishes!! Me!! !
It annoys me too. I eat everything off my plate usually, but even if I left something it's in one 'blob' not spread out. The only other thing I leave on my plate are little bits I found in my mouth that annoy me such as bits of tomato or pepper skin, or bits of onion that are from too near the outside of the onion and are like cardboard etc. I don't understand why people leave their plates like you described either. I think it's the principle of waste for me, but also why not just scrape those last bits up into one forkful and eat them. It is annoying to scrape tiny little bits off before the plate can be washed. A minor thing in the saga of life, but irritating none the less.

soozzi, I actually discovered this method myself. I stack the plates on the bottom and bowls on top. I put the silverwear on the side. It works almost every time. All I have to do is rinse a bit and sometimes wipe with a sponge.
I have the feeling some people would object to this and would say it is socially inappropriate.
Now I put there only what I know I will finish; and if I'm full, I stop eating, now matter how much is left. I've lost over 20 pounds.
^this^
In general, it is not advisable to eat food simply because it is on one's plate. One should eat only to the point of satiety.
I am feeling an irresistible urge to mention the fact that human mouths (and tongues) are replete with bacteria, but I will say no more than that.

Actually, that's a fairly standard way to wash your dishes. The only added points: wash your glassware first so there are no oils in the sink and wash your cookware last as that tends to contain the most oils.
You're good. Not socially inappropriate at all.

I only put on the family's plates what they can eat, nothing more, so I don't have to worry about piling up plates and people being too full to eat it or eating it and getting overweight. From what I've seen on TV, the US is somewhere that portions are huge, too much for what people need. I mean when people are eating out, I don't know what portions people put on their plates in their own homes though!

Americans tend to put too much on their plates at home, too. Not all, of course, but obesity is an epidemic here and I would hasten to say that most people probably do not even recognize what a "serving" of any given kind of food is. I would say that among the people I know (college educated, middle class folk) probably only half know what constitutes a healthy, balanced diet of appropriate portions, and of the half that do, probably only a half make any regular attempt to follow it.

i never eat in company (except when tammy comes over once per month), and when i eat, i always just throw the plate into the garbage after i am finished. i use plastic plates. it costs about 12 cents per plate, and i reason that i would not wash a plate for 12 cents, and so i see it as a bargain.
people may not like it, but when dinner is over for me, i just scrape the lot (including the plates and utensils) off the table into the bin. very easy.
i think the plastic in the plates and utensils is biodegradable. i never wash up because i just throw it all in the bin.
in my "life", thus far. only had a couple guests at my house eat. and when they did, at least 2 of them helped themselves to something. then told me "i can't eat it" and threw it in the trash can or garbage disposal.
quite frankly, i never considered just tossing something like that. sure, if you throw it away in a public trash can or leave it at a restaurant, that's one thing.
but to throw it away at someone's house.
makes me wonder how popular this sort of behavior is.
my precious lil "parents" gave me a lot of pressure to eat everything on my plate. they knew i liked Taco Bell. my precious lil "dad" took me to taco bell once after eating at a chinese restaurant. i said i was full. he had the nerve to tell me it did not matter.
not to completely blame them. but. quite frankly. emotional overeating. they were pretty skinny and could eat pretty much nonstop and not gain weight.
maybe i should've been more wasteful, like my precious lil "friends". ![]()
I'm also one who doesn't like the idea of "clean plate club" because I've lost weight when I decided to quit eating when full, even if there's food on my plate. If I'm at a restaurant, I'll get a doggy bag and have leftovers for lunch.
Now, when I was a child, I thought there was a literal clean plate club, as my mom said I once asked if we pay club dues.
