I enjoy isolation, what I wouldn't enjoy is thinking that isolated is all I'll ever be.

I prefer living alone.I get all of the socialization that I need at work.I am content with my music, the internet and my tv. Of course,I desire a romantic relationship but only a very limited one.I have a few close friends that I occasionally see but other than that I have no desire to expand my horizons. Even if I wanted to,I am not sure that I could,my sensory issues can be pretty severe at times and I can shut down pretty quickly in many social situations.

It's not so much that i really want to be social..i just need some kind of interaction with people..to at least make me feel human.
everyone else seems to be able to at least make some friends...even though they have AS..but i just feel that not being able to feel comfortable among people makes things just that bit more difficult to find friends.
Isolation for some might be OK but having just that someone to talk to when you are alone at night would make my life a lot better.

groups and things like that don't help as i hate that kind of stuff..that's why i joined this site at least people can get what you are going through.

This is the worst part of having AS for me, as i live alone and find the isolation just kills me!
I have no friends..i do have family i see on a daily basis but it's not the same as having at least one friend you can talk to
going back and closing your door and being on your own is a terrible feeling..staring at four walls all the time..and feeeling everyone else has a life..and i am still waiting for mine to start.
It's difficult for me to go into social situations so hard to overcome...does anyone else feel that living alone with As and having problems with interaction is a nightmare? :(

Felt like putting a string of laughing smilies here, but then realized you might take it the wrong way. I wanted to say I'm laughing with you, not at you, but then realized you aren't laughing about this.

Yet.

Not sure you ever will either, but you sound just like me at the same age.

I was a latch-key kid. I hated being alone. Felt just like you all through my teen years, and into my mid to late twenties. Throughout though, I did get out now and then, more and more over time. Gradually, I became more and more interactive with people. Became part of certain groups of friends, structured groups at times, and even worked some jobs working directly with the public for years.

It was an interesting learning experience. By now (I'm 52 now BTW), I crave isolation. I want it and need it far more regularly than anyone I know. Now it's a blessing, not a curse.

Get out there more. Just do it. After a while, you may feel much differently about being alone. I think it's one of the greatest ironies of our condition.

Sorry. Can't help it. Every time this subject comes up, I am compelled to post this:

I thrive on isolation. If I want interaction, I just go online. Otherwise, I'd be a hermit.

Funny. This thread was created eight years ago. Not inspired by the current epidemic.

I got friends online so I do just fine. I have history as a shut in so being reclusive is not something completely out of character for me
