No churches here. There are some in major cities but religion has really declined in Canada.
There might not be any churches where you are, and religion may be declining... but where I live (also in Canada), there are churches and temples of all religions all over the place. They're in the city, in neighbourhoods, in shopping areas... and there's one street in Richmond BC about a half hour drive from me that has like 8 or 10 large churches & temples of various religions all up and down it. Christian churches, A Muslim mosque, a Buddhist temple among them.
Many churches might choose to sponsor a poor person or family in the community and provide them with groceries. It's certainly not unheard of. One of my cousins used to get groceries and a christmas hamper from some local church when she needed their help. As for a hot meal, if anyone is in need of one the best place of faith to visit is a Sikh Temple. Almost all of them have a cafeteria where you can go and eat a hot meal for free almost any time of day or evening. You just have to obey their customs of removing your shoes & covering your hair with a clean bandana that they provide. Also, men typically sit on one side of the cafeteria and women on the other - so pay attention to things like that. I've eaten at a few different temples with indian friends when they've stopped by for a quick prayer session and a snack of blessed food. There's usually some sort of lentil dish or two, some rice and/or naan bread, spiced veggies, and a sweet dessert or two. They also serve water or chai tea usually. Anyone is welcome any time they're open. You don't have to know anything about the sikh faith, just be quiet and respectful and they'll gladly feed you a warm meal whenever you're in need. Sikhs tend to pride themselves on "savo." (service to the community)
