I would agree with the above. People who have a common goal often transcend pettiness. This is especially so when people share an intellectual interest. Egos might clash--but, at least, stereotypes like you describe fly out the window.

People are always saying I have an attitude because I am a black girl. It's driving me crazy! I can literally sit in a corner and not talk to a soul and people will say I am not talking because I am angry (they never think I am shy or socially awkward). Then when I do talk (I tend to be bad in conversations and can't modify tones of voice), people then accredit it to attitude. Also, I am not sure how to smile and that makes people really uncomfortable. It makes me sad because I am a very nice person. I don't know what to do!! How do I get over this stereotype? It really bothers me...

Why do you believe your skin pigmentation causes people to dislike you?
Why do so many black people think everyone is racist?

I dont see that in the original post at all.

1) she didnt say "folks dislike me because of my skin color".

2) What she DID say is "folks wrongly think I dislike THEM because of my skin color. And they think that because I am a socially inept aspie who sends the wrong social signals".

3) She knows folks think the above because that's what they tell her.

I once read that common purpose is the one factor that makes or breaks all groups, and I think it's correct. Race wasn't an issue in my last workplace, at least among the scientists. The only racism I saw was in another part of the establishment where there was no common interest. That's where all the hostility and tensions were.
