Because he is an ass and he is rude and insulting. Not my words, they were someone else's. He didn't find the character funny at all and thinks the whole humor is stupid.

Luckily humor is subjective, I enjoy it even when you and others are completely right about him being an ass.

That's why he's funny!

He's a total ass.

Whoa, so it's meant to be a comedy?

OK, to be fair, all I have seen of the show are the clips on YouTube where the laugh-track is edited out (I always found laugh tracks incredible annoying in general, so always avoided most shows that used them.)

If I didn't know the show by reputation, and recognise the typical sitcom set dressing etc., I would struggle to realise that it is supposed to be a comedy at all - the only joke seems to be that people who aren't NT are just inherently funny because they're good at being rude to each other. To be fair, sitcoms like 'friends' seem to be pretty much the same playground humour but with NT characters - if people were so verbally abusive in real life, I hope they'd be kicked out of the door, no matter how witty the choice of words.

I do feel sorry for Sheldon though - it seems such a shame to single him out when, from what I can see, basically all of the characters are @ssh0les to each other whenever the script writers think they can squeeze a cheap giggle out of it. Very lazy humour, IMHO.

Someone who truly acts like Sheldon would never make it as a friend of mine in real life. Too wishy-washy for me, but I assume that's what the producers of TBBT were looking for. I haven't followed the show much, but in what I have seen, he strikes me as a "textbook" stereotyped Gemini. I do appreciate some of his T-shirt choices, however.
I guess it's one of those characters you're supposed to love to hate, much like Dr. House, who I would never allow to lay one hand on me as a real M.D.
Of course I found the ABC series "Barney Miller" very dry and comically lacklustre back in the 1970's.

If the fictional charactor Dr. Gregory House was a real doctor he would be the first person I would want to disgnose me because he is right almost 100 percent of the time. Yes it would stink because he would be wrong several times before getting it right in the end.

Sheldon was cool before he had a girlfriend. Now he's just another clown in another spinoff of "Friends."

I have trouble with that too, and harsh, grating voices (one of the girls I think?), and flashy scene change animations. I only saw it once, and had to turn the sound off, and - yeah, it just wasn't my thing.

Barney Miller relied on deadpan humor. New Yorkers are known for their deadpan humor. The show probably appealed most to New Yorkers.

My dad used to enjoy B.M, and he's from Albuquerque. Of course the humour did not fly over his head like it did mine. I was so happy when that show went off, I guess I just couldn't "get it".

I agree with the poster about Sheldon. The way I look at it the show is about stereotypical nerds and whilst that often fits the autism stereotype, I dont think they are specifically implying any link to it.

He does seem to have some characteristics which are typical specifically of autism and not (only) of being nerdy.
Such as his extreme insistence on routines. Or that he's not able to read facial expressions and body language.
Maybe the creators of the show just don't want to admit they are using autistic stereotypes because then it would officially be a show which makes fun of autistic people, which might not look so nice to some.
Also by the way I find Sheldon actually does quite likeable things sometimes. Such as when in one episode Penny makes Leonard feel bad about his love for action figures and Sheldon sort of defends him by pointing out to her that she's being hypocritical (because she also has cuddly toys and other childish things).

I also find that as well. He comes across more to me as a jerk than anything else.
