I sense the teacher wanted to give the kid a grammar lesson.

Perhaps with the desire to assert his teacher-dom upon him.

I think it was an attempt to press the issue in the most wrong way possible. But I don't think it was intentional. Sounds like old school. I heard that from everyone when I was growing up....

Also things like "behind the at..." and all those gems including the OP's teacher's quote.

it would have been funny if the teacher responded with, "yes, but you may not leave this classroom." :mrgreen:

Woulda been funny, but I also think mean unless delivered with a huge wink and made known it was just in fun. But, humour is a much more effective teacher than an authoritarian approach most times.
