If you could be non-Autistic for one day, would you try it?

It is possible to wonder, and still "be."

I wonder all the time, and it doesn't make me unhappy at all.

It seems to me that, when you wonder what it's like to be different, it means that you desire to be different. If you're happy as you are, then you wouldn't think about being different.

Agreed. Or as Popeye puts it: "I yam what I yam an' that's all that I yam ..."

I don't think I would try it as it'd all be new and I'd be as mixed up and confused as I am now. It may not be ideal but at least I know my autistic self. If I were suddenly without it what would I be, do, feel, say, like... ? everything would change

I'd love to do this for a day.I don't desire to be different because I know I'm better than many others. Call me a narcissist or a misanthrope but te truth is, a LOT of people just aren't that smart, clever or interesting or fun. I am a nice little blend of all those things and I have the Aspergers and ADHD to thank for my eccentricities. It's even made my Music Writing style the way it is.

But supposing it all seems absolutely wonderful - suddenly you understood all the social games and people were obviously relating to you and you knew exactly how to respond etc. Everything just flowed into place and it was fabulous.

And then your day in this "social paradise" ends.
How would you feel now?

I think I'd do it. I'm sure I would learn a few things that I could later apply to my dealings with the normals.

You know, a psychologist once remarked that as long as my germophobia (I didn't tell him about my suspecting autism... I didn't feel that it would be a good idea given the situation) didn't interfere with me living a normal life, then there was no issue.

I told him that I would be much more worried with it interfering with living an abnormal life.

I'd like to try being NT for a day.

I don't think that it would make a huge difference. For me, I think that the difference is just that I'm really slow on picking up social skills. What other people take 5 years to learn took me 15 years. What most people learn by age 20, I'm learning now at age 49. So I don't think that a single day will make much difference.

But I would love to find out.

I would, maybe to find out how I would change. If I wasn't born Autistic, I would've had a different life without speech therapy and going to public school BEFORE private school so my parents could pay for the treatment. But then again, it would also influence which friends I have now and how I view the world. I want to know how different my life would be, but I wouldn't want to give up what I have now.

Call me a narcissist

Since I have your permission, you're a narcissist.

I would be worried that it would be so different. I like the view of the world that I have even with all the difficulties. I would like to remain as myself but find someone relationship wise who would understand me.

Chronos: Sock seams(glad to hear I'm not the only one)... still bother me at 51, I think they are okay put my shoes on and then quite often have to take then off to re-adjust, drives me crazy, many other things too.

No, I would not want to experience being NT for any length of time. I enjoy life and am thankful everyday that God made me autistic.
