Thanks.

Though, it is still undetermined how the adults on this forum are determining their supposed "giftedness" or "high intelligence". A childhood test taken ten to twenty+ years ago would not be appropriate to cite as evidence of adult giftedness or high intelligence.

I have no misconception that ASD people can be "gifted" and "highly intelligent". I said that in the first post by saying ASD people have "stratospheric potential ...".

I have two ASD people in my family. They were both exceptional in math and engineering. My brother for example, did his B.S. & M.S. in Electrical Engineering with a 3.7GPA at the #1 University for EE in four years on an accelerated EE program.

Where is he now ? With his 0 EQ intelligence. Oh, he stopped working in EE (he couldn't take the work environment of lower intelligence managers -- as he called them -- telling him what to do), he left the country and lives as a hermit in the Ukraine in a tiny apartment, and eeks out a living, and I have not seen him in many years, and I will never see him again.

I think it is possible to identify the particular ASD traits that make these ASD people gifted. In the above example of my brother, his particular trait of "precision-thinking" pulled him ahead of the others I believe. Everyone at that level is smart. However, I think the capability to order apparently chaotic things was not as achievable by the NT engineering student.

I am seeing on this forum people calling themselves "gifted" without any explanation as I did in the above paragraph about what ASD trait is enabling giftedness. I get the impression that the ASD people believe that ASD alone makes them gifted. That would seem incorrect as they may not be able to utilize a particular trait to "giftedness" level. For example, I could never achieve what my brother did with my female brain. He was always better than me at math/engineering and I was always better than him at writing. My ASD female brain could have never achieved giftedness in engineering.

Okay, so I lied a little, I was not done. I was only almost done.

I have been categorized as gifted, and it is as valid a classification now as it ever has. However, given the somewhat derogatory and accusatory phrasing of your posts, I really don't see why exactly anyone owes it to you to explain what it is that would make them gifted. You're getting a narrow slice of life in this forum that is by definition going to be incomplete, and taking that narrow slice of life and using it against people as evidence that they are not who they say they are is an a**hole move. If you didn't start your thread whinging about how much you hate that autistic people might talk about skills and abilities they really have because they don't prove it to your satisfaction, there might be room for discussion. But so far, you seem entirely hostile to the notion that other people can report their own lives without being vetted by you.

There's nothing to debate with you.

Hang on. This thread title doesn't make any sense. I am great. The greatest authority on this planet is a primate. Who else is qualified to make such a determination but one's self.

It is a small man that uses a measure outside himself to scale his worth. A man's worth is himself. As himself he is unique and there is no standard to compare with. If he conforms to standard, then he becomes less.

Your first mistake was defining success for other people based on your own values (which appear to be very shallow). If your brother is happier in the Ukrane and not working in EE, then who are you to judge him for that?

I have seen the exact polar opposite - none (quantifiable as 0) of my AS friends, co-workers, roommates, etc think that way. Every single one of them undervalues their skills, and it takes some serious brow-beating to get them to aspire to anything more than where they currently are.

Recognizing that you aren't entitled to anything in the workplace is definitely one of the keys to success - but, at the same time, unshakable confidence in your abilities is just as important.

i wouldn't say it bothers me that other people dont spend their lives as productively as they could, but it does bother me when i dont do the same for myself.

I do disagree with the OP deciding on rules to life though.

The op assumes there's a point to life and somewhere to go, somewhere to climb, somewhere to aim for.

There isn't. Life in itself is an experience you should be making the most of, in the ways that make sense to you.

Has the op ever considered that he's the stupid, dull, failed one for going in the direction that he's going?

Wasting all his life on what he's doing while his life slips by and he achieves nothing of note.

Maybe the aspies that have fallen to the wayside as he likes to think are actually the clever ones that realised the futility of going in the direction that he's going in and decided to do their own thing.

As for the computer game hate.... I feel sorry for people that can't understand what games are about. And when i say games, i mean all games, there's no distinction between computer games and games like chess, word games, puzzle games, whatever else, games are just games.

It's not just about passing time. Games can be a real challenge.

I'm not good with words so i looked up games on wikipedia, not to link someone elses thoughts but to link my own thoughts in other peoples words.

Quote:
"Key components of games are goals, rules, challenge, and interaction. Games generally involve mental or physical stimulation, and often both. Many games help develop practical skills, serve as a form of exercise, or otherwise perform an educational, simulational, or psychological role."

"A game is a system in which players engage in an artificial conflict, defined by rules, that results in a quantifiable outcome."

I mean, whats your hate on games anyway? That they're not real? The problem with real is that you're never going to be challenged in a way you can be in a game. Games are specifically designed to push you right up to your limits. Real life NEVER does that. Real life teaches you so slowly in comparison to games.

To be absolutely honest i feel really sorry for the person that can't learn and take enjoyment from them. Give me an expert on a subject that plays games to a person thats just an expert on a subject any day.

I personally love games for the level of comprehension on a subject they give you. It's like the difference between driving theory and the person that's been driving for thousands of hours, in every road condition, through close calls and other situations that require fast responses. It just doesn't compare. Games playing is absolutely not a waste of time for the mental growth they give.

I made no comments about the greatness of your ASD.

Your exact words were when writing to me was that "my autism is not so great". Are you going to make stuff up every time you write? I did not take offense as it was meaningless to call "my autism not so great".

If you're going to make claims about exact words, then you should actually fact check yourself before doing so:

Here is what your wrote ...

Verdandi wrote:

After reading this paragraph, I think I've decided that you're not so great as autistic people go.
Your argument is downright mediocre

I told you I was not offended. Yet you endlessly deny saying, "you're not so great as autistic people go". That is an silly, stupid, offensive thing to say to someone. But according to you, you never said it.

You are a liar. You claimed that Verdandi said that your "autism is not so great" which doesn't make a whole lot of sense as a statement, and anything that it could be interpreted as meaning is totally different to what she actually said. Upon realising that you were wrong, you started making more false accusations towards her. She did not deny saying "you're not so great as autistic people go". The post you quoted was a direct confirmation that she did say this. Do NOT lie about someone's actions and expect to get away with it.

As for the statement itself, it is an accurate one. You don't strike me as a particularly nice person. Who are you to judge whether someone's life is worthwhile? What makes you qualified to say that someone is "squandering" their life by doing something they enjoy?

You also don't seem to understand that just because someone cannot express their intelligence to use it in a productive way does not mean it isn't there. Some people on the spectrum may suffer from social anxiety, and many may not be able to communicate verbally.

I think giftedness is a label to show potential for greatness in something, but does it have any meaning without an end product? Not sure what the OP intended but I have always been interested in what happens to kids who are labelled gifted as I've not heard of an adult getting this label. Revisiting them 10 or 20 yrs down the line, are they all still gifted or normalised and what parameters are used to evaluate this.

Well, with regards to intent, you will see WP has tons of supposedly "gifted" or "high intelligence" ASD people but they won't say how their supposed "giftedness" or "high intelligence" was determined. They won't say where they work at, or what they do that would make someone think they are gifted. They won't say what traits are facilitating their "giftedness" or "high intelligence".

You can see on this this particular tread topic. It is near impossible to progress to an answer, because people inject, "Don't knock World of WarCraft" or lately, "You are a liar cause you did not quote the exact words", or "You are not a great autistic person". Then they argue ague endlessly about stuff that is not related to the topic. These statements are hopefully being made by children cause this discourse is not indicative of high intelligence in my opinion. A highly intelligent person would just answer the question.

My autism specialist doctor gave me a test to test the boundries of my autism. It is an ASD capability test. You do flashcards, repeat number sequences back to the doctor, you listen to audio and repeat what you heard, they increase the difficulty , you take a written picture test where you replicate the picture on the other side of the paper, and do some stuff on a computer. This is a real giftedness test. Noone will say if they took that or how they scored.

You fail to address the simple question of how their high intelligence or giftedness is determined. The undervaluation of their skills has nothing to do with how their supposed giftedness or high intelligence is determined. A written test? It is made-up?

Thumbs up to Loose Wheel! Thank you for stating a reason.

So, for you it is like the Oracle tells Neo, "no one can tell you your the ONE [gifted or high intelligence], you just know it". There is no standard. I have a 1 billion IQ if I feel it.

No. It is you that is super-sensitive to any inquiry into a claim of "high intelligence" or "giftedness". You think this an argument or a debate. The first few sentences of this topic explain my position concerning how these people claim something and provide no evidence. I have repeated stuck to this point, though, having to answer non-related questions along the way.

My autism doctor administered the autism test to me that tests the capabilities of my autism. They have you run through flashcards where you repeat back number sequences on flashcards, repeat back audio sequences, do computer work, and try to replicate a drawings from memory.
That is a giftedness test. I don't think I scored particularly high though. There is a such a thing as an adult giftedness test.

You are so defensive that you use words like "argument", "debate", "hostility", "vetted by me". It is you that is bothered by an objective inquiry into how these people substantiate their proclamations of "giftedness" or "high intelligence".

You claim to be "gifted", yet you cannot say how that determination was made. You claim to have a high IQ, yet you cannot say how that was determined. Instead, you present non-sequitur
statements that I am trying to do X or trying to do Y to drown out the question. Again, this is a defensive response from you.

"How do you know?" is a very reasonable question to ask someone claiming giftedness or high intelligence.

I never meant to offend you. I have made many positive statements about ASD people and went to far in my original post to point out some traits that could be identified as enabling their claims.

I am aware that she said this. In my post, was a direct confirmation that she said this. The same can be said of Verdandi's post. Evidently, you are the one with the comprehension issue here.

Firstly, you said that Verdandi said something completely different from what she actually did.

Then, you accuse Verdandi of denying her words in response to a post which was a direct confirmation that she said "you're not so great as autistic people go" when she denied the statement you FALSELY accused her of making:

"Your autism is not so great"

LoveNotHate wrote:

You have completely ignored a large portion of my post. You claimed that Verdandi made a statement completely different from what she actually said. When she pulled you up on this, you made false claims that she denied what she said. I will not contribute to your topic if you insist upon making false accusations against other members because your ego can't handle the fact that you made a mistake.

If you had, I dunno - made an effort to read past the first four words of my post, you'd have realised that I made a point relevant to your question, which you have failed to address. You then came back, attacking members of this thread while masking it as a legitimate point, which is exactly what you're criticising us for.

It is also obvious that you can't stand being criticised yourself....

LoveNotHate wrote:

An obvious attempt to make people feel as though they shouldn't criticise you, no matter what you do wrong.

If you think that this response makes me unintelligent, then I honestly couldn't care less. I do not hold your opinion in high regard.

So, are you going to respond to any of the points I've made. Or are you going to delete the majority of my post and make a condescending remark?

She admitted she made a mistake.

Here is what was said ... Verdandi said ... you're not so great as autistic people go. [/quote]

It is a statement about the ASD itself. Apparently, my ASD is not so great, because I am not so great as autistic people go. I took it to mean I am supposedly lowering functioning, or stupider than other autistic people. It is offensive.

You are looking for exact words, seriously, you do realize that two sentences can be written differently that mean the same thing?

The two sentences did not seem to mean the same thing. I understand now that you've explained what you thought her statement meant. I didn't associate it with your intelligence or functioning level at all. Thanks for explaining your perspective.

What it meant was that she disapproved of you because you seem to feel qualified to judge whether someone's life is meaningful or not. This is not your right, nor is it anyone else's.

You have made a few valid points in other posts, but until you can get over yourself and stop being so judgemental, I will not participate in this conversation any more.

Goodbye for now.

I said in my original post, ".. people who play computer games all the time". Yes, I am judgemental about these people. Your position is that you think I need "get over myself" because I think people who "play computer games all the time are squandering their lives". I think me and 99.99% of the population are in agreement there (including earlier people posting on this topic). It is not a far-out viewpoint. You will have a hard time finding anyone to converse with if you think people who hold that view need to get over themselves.

As this point, I am inclined to believe everyone is making up arbitrary IQ numbers and making up that they are gifted. Nothing wrong with that I guess, but what else do they make up?
