I can honestly say I hate sound all together unless it's something I'm doing (ex; watching tv or playing my iPod). I especially hate when multiple sound sources are going on at the same time like having the tv on and my nephew playing DS with the volume on (even if it's very quiet). I probably sit in the worst places at both of my jobs when it comes to sound. At my full time I have a cubicle with low walls and I sit right by the entrance to IT and right behind me is our help desk so there's constant chatter and phones ringing. At my part-time I sit right next to these massive machines that are always scanning cheques throughout the night. I also suspect that I have CAPD (central auditory processing disorder) and I retain almost no information when in noisy situations.

To combat this I've gotten accustomed to wearing headphones and either playing videos or music really loudly to drown out the outside noise. As long as it's noise I've decided to listen to then I have no problem with it being loud. As much as possible I have my headphones on whether I'm at work or walking in the mall or outside.

Noises bother me a lot, especially loud, sudden noises, like the phone ringing, fire alarm, doorbell.

What i experience with noises is....

loud sudden sounds dont realy bother me, only if they keep on going that just annoys me, but its the constant ambient noises which really irritate me, young child screaming is so painfull and i just end up running away covering my ears, i cant stand the sound of a busy school playground with all the childeren shouting etc is so annoying, and in the past few months there have been a military transport aircraft (C130) constantly curcle over head due to a military base about 7 miles away, the constant droneing sound just irritates me to no end, if im in a room with 2 people talking to one another and im trying to listen to there conversation then some more people sit next to us and start talking, all the voices in the room sound like they are mixed together all at the same level and i cannot concentrate to the original conversation and end up getting anxious and i will just leave.

All the sensory issues i have are very disruptive to my day life.

My mom said when I was a baby, they took me to the circus and I cried until they got me away from the noise. I hated it. And I wasn't the type to cry much.

These days, I mostly don't mind it (or at least accept it out of necessity) as long as I've gotten enough sleep. If I'm tired, the noises are magnified and drive me crazy. Unless it's the constant hum of an airplane engine, that kind of thing disappears into the background and I can sleep.

I'm ok with loud music *on my terms*. That means no booty bass or fast tempo disco s***, like Valoyossa said. Pink Floyd and Dire Straits are fine loud for me. I listen to them loud when I cook.

Loud noises bother me - banging, sirens, the bass of music that I'm not listening to, like from a car outside or something. Big mouth people can get under my skin, too. It's like they make a wall of noise with their mouths.

When I was little my parents took me to a parade - I was very small, still in diapers and someone was holding me on their lap. When the sirens came on the scene I screamed and cried. But I remember being in agony and being scared and my aunt and mom looking at me, taken aback. I couldn't communicate it, but I remember looking them in the eyes and looking at the sirens and screaming. Makes me shudder.

Then 25 years later I moved to nyc, where all loud noises in the universe originate.

There are some quiet places in the city. Relatively speaking.

Some of my favorites:

- The castle on 79th Street transverse in Central Park, and the surrounding paths, especially around 3.30 am. Sometimes there are a hundred people around you, but it's completely dark and you can't see them, and they aren't making any noise.
- Riverside Park, way up on the far upper west side
- Roosevelt Island
- Under-construction parts of JFK

Yeah! There definitely some nice places in nyc - I tended to like museums and libraries. Parks I never found that comfortable, don't know why, I love the outdoors and my parents live out in the country. I lived in Brooklyn where yelling and jack hammers seemed a part of the communication system - oh, and banging on pipes. hee hee I sort of miss my crazy, screaming land lady.

I just couldn't take it though. 10 years was plenty for me.

They used to.

If they bother me now the problem is just about distractions, as it might either be keeping me from going to sleep or from doing a task that requires concentration.

But I love to blast my music and have even gotten a complaint from a resident in my apartment complex for high volume at 4 A.M. (I was in a crappy mood and didn't notice the stereo was turned up to begin with XD ) And I love concerts.
