you're not a doctor, stop telling people they don't have AS.
I would just like to voice my opinion to all of those who keep complaining about the people who are self diagnosed...GET OVER IT!! They're not hurting you. They are looking for support like everyone else. Just because you have a piece of paper does not make you better than them. I used to be one of them too, and thankfully nobody treated me like that. I don't know what's gotten into people where they suddenly think they're doctors and can diagnose or undiagnose people without even meeting them. Isn't that the exact example of a hyppocrite? You're complaining that these people claim to have something without a professional opinion, yet you are claiming they don't have it without a professional opinion. Neither one of you have a degree in phsychiatry, so neither one of you has to the right to tell someone what they are or aren't for sure. JUST GIVE THESE PEOPLE SUPPORT LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, BECAUSE IF THEY ARE HERE THEN THEY OBVIOUSLY NEED IT!! thank you, and just for good measure, here is an emoticon rolling it's eyes...

People can actually get support from this place? I mean, it's just words written by faceless, voiceless and nameless strangers.
And conversation is just words spoken by people whos faces many of us don't look at anyway.
Of course we can get support here!

i must say I agree with this.
I am formally diagnosed but feel others who are self-diagnosed should be welcome to post and contribute and id as AS. In the scheme of things, it doesn't really affect me. They are trying to sort out their issues and if WP helps them, that is a very good thing.

Agreed with Daniel, it goes both way.
Self-diagnosing is ridiculous and always will be. And just because I hold this belief does not mean I am undiagnosing you, because you were not diagnosed in the first place.
Fine if you relate to those with autism. Say you do, do not say you have self-diagnosed yourself. It's hard to even take that seriously for me.
People actually care what others say here?
It's nothing like talking to people you know in person, like your carer for example. If you don't know someone, how can you get feelings from them?
The thing is that most people here share in some way experiences, symptoms etc, and so we can relate to each other and find support.
On another note, some of the people in that thread were completely ridicules. One guy suggested that the latest generation was too cool, so nobody would want to become psychologists and Aspergers would stop existing. Then you compromised by saying that maybe the "nerdy girls" would. That's just one example from over 20 pages.

It's social practice (I admit, it doesn't help much), plus ASDs are a passing interest.
Sati,
Self-diagnosed alludes and applies certainty to something that's an uncertainty. "Might have an ASD", is far more accurate.
Lock and Sticky, Yeah!!
I fall under not self diagnosed and not officially diagnosed. Call it diagnosed by others serving under nonclinical capacity.

This is so funny and so true. I hate the question of when my son was diagnosed. He has always had aspergers and I mean prebirth always. I am an OT I have known what his issues were and helped him deal with the NT world since birth. When I actually had a doctor write it down was irrelivant.
As a therapist we often tell the doctors what our patient most likely has from the symptoms not the tests. We often aim the doctor in the right direction because we know the patient better. That is all people are doing here they know their own issues "their symptoms" better than any doctor that sees them for a few minutes.
A few years ago my father became very ill and went to the doctor. The doctor told him he had bladder cancer and started chemo. Sometime later they did tests and found no signs of the disease. But, my father continued to lose weight and kept telling them that he was in pain. By the time they figured out where the cancer had actually started and that he had been misdiagnosed he was too weak for more chemo and died shortly after that.
People know where their pain is whether they have the 'seal of approval' from a doctor or not. And, while people who self diagnose may very well be 100% wrong they may also be 100% correct.

Carer is a stupid word. Its awkward, and doesnt roll off the tongue, especially for such a short thing.

There's many, many causes of your symptoms. Sure, most are viruses (these are each different conditions in the end, and there's hundreds of these), but allergies can make you display those symptoms.
