It really annoys me being corrected about my spelling if I make a mistake. Not every one is perfect spellers and I can't be bothered fixing a mistake every time some one complains just so they can be happy about the fact the spelling on one word that maybe wrong in a post is correct. Why is it so important to some perfectionists. As long as the message gets accross and its not to hard to read its fine.

I answered "I am one / I like it"

Although complaining is not what I do. But I like to be corrected, and I do like to correct others sometimes (but not if I know they do not like to be corrected).

I am not a language freak, but I like it a lot to improve my English (and keep my Dutch at a reasonable level). I see corrections about my spelling as free lessons :-)

I never spell check or proof read or reread any of my posts.

If I write in English I always reread my posts, in Dutch I sometimes reread.

edit: but I do not use spellchecking usually.

I agree, and I wouldn't normally do it; but there are sometimes occasions when pointing out someone's error may highlight their own criticism of another. It's not really the spelling that is the issue.

Anyway, I frequently make mistakes, and I'm sure the Yanks think our British way of spelling is hilarious!

It depends on how many spelling errors there are.

A few spelling mistakes here and there = not annoying. Everyone does that every so often.

A paragraph full of spelling mistakes and/or netspeak = annoying.

What's ironic is my brother is a person like that, and whenever I make a mistake in typing he points it out, and he claims I do the same, but I only do it when he makes a MAJOR typo, and only when it is on, like, a homework assignment, or when he's filling out a form. He does it all the time, even when I'm writing my quick little nonsensical rants and poems that are to be stored in my personal files. I deal with it, but it does get annoying.

Occasional spelling and/or grammatical errors don't bother me too much if it is something another person wrote. If it's something I wrote, I usually go back and fix it as soon as I can because I'm a perfectionist like that. I proofread my posts before I post them (almost every single one of them... some 1600-something or rather), but I don't use spellcheck ever. Even on school papers.

As the parent of a child with "Learning disabilities in the written language area" and being an adult with the same issues, I would never correct another person, other than, as was mentioned above, if English is not their first language and I know they would appreciate the help.

The point of posts is to communicate an idea. If the idea gets across, that's all I care about.

I am a reformed correction officer.
I discovered that people like to make their own mistakes, and in fact, this is a good way to learn. However, if I think it will cause them a problem I will say something.
In general here i do not correct mistakes because they are the same ones i make, from dyslexia or just typing too fast. if i understand what they mean, i leave it alone. if they are communicating an error to others i may say something.
a few things grate on my nerves and i say something with full awareness that i live in a glass hosue. :D

i absolutely hate it!! !! ! i have trouble spelling to begin with, but when i'm on the computer, that is my down/relax time. when i write my books, i have to make sure everything is perfect, and with that kind of pressure, i need to be able to relax the rest of the time. it really irks me when people complain about spelling/grammar mistakes. i'm in several writer's groups (on-line) plus a homeschooling group (on-line), and that comes up sooooo much. sure, if i'm sending a business e-mail, you better believe i use caps and spellcheck and proofread, but for everyday purposes--screw it!! !! !!

sorry, don't mean to sound mad because it's not the people here, but i've heard it so many times where writers try to put down other writers because there are grammar/spelling mistakes in e-mails. they just can't seem to get it that some of us don't give a s*** about our personal e-mails and save that kind of scrutiny for our professional works.

There are some niceties of netiquette involved here. It is generally considered "bad manners" to correct someone's spelling on a message forum. I've done it here just once, and I tried to be "non-confrontational" about it. One of the reasons forums don't have a spell check built in is because how a person spells tells you a lot about them. If we all had perfect spelling it would get boring. There are certain words I misspell a lot, and other words, if I'm uncertain, I google them or check dictionary.com. My spelling isn't perfect.

I am sometimes surprised by how... uhm... misspelled some of the words are here. Especially when it's obvious the person doing the misspelling is really smart.

The word I misspell the most is occurred. I spel it ocurred.
