It doesn't have to be, if you can do a few things on a consistent basis.
1) Pay your bills. Will you make more money than you spend? A month-by-month budget can help you determine if you'll have problems down the road. Also, try and find the most convenient ways to pay the bills. I got in bill trouble not from lack of funds but simply not getting around to writing out the check and mailing it out. Online/automatic withdrawal are your friends here, as long as you keep a positive balance.
2) Eat well. Do you know how to food shop for yourself and make simple meals? Take out is great time to time, but every day can get expensive and unhealthy. My last apartment didn't even have a stove, so I got by on a microwave, hot plate and toaster oven, which is enough to make just about anything for a single man.
3) Maintenance. Can you do your own laundry, change the occasional lightbulb, clean the bathroom and fix your own computer? There're other things too, but those are the main ones.
4) Help. Have a list of emergency numbers and locations if things go bad. Police, hospital, car repair, utilities, etc...
Basically, it's scary until it's not. Living your own life, making your own decisions, is a great thing. Once you get a routine down of the things you have to do, you'll find that you never want to go back to living under someone else's roof. Unless it's a girl, which is a whole new set of rules.
