A comment like that is a bully feeling out your reactions to see if she can up the ante. Her comments may become increasingly brazen if you don't confront her. If you confront her about the comment she will tell you that she wasn't talking about you and that you're defensive, argumentative, paranoid and over-sensitive. I never know what to do about it, but I can always predict it. Maybe someone else knows what to do about it.

She made a very stupid comment. I'm quiet in real life, and comments like that make me angry. I'd forget what the witch said and just do my job, every time I come in. Don't talk to the woman. Don't even look at her. She's not worth your time.

Well what she said is kinda true in my case. Because I'm so quiet people pay no attention to me, and when that happens I can do lots of things without people noticing.

I suppose it would be wrong to make a generalization about garrulous people.....

I remember a very long time ago at my first part time job a guy told me I never talked. I asked him, "what do you want me to say, I have nothing to say"? I laugh at that now but I think it was kind of a weird reaction. But it was honest. I've always hated it when people tried to force me to talk especially when I didn't know what to say.

You can't be sneaky without being quiet.

Welll...you could tell her you're only sneaky about following people home and finding out what time they go to bed.

Seriously, she just sounds wildly insecure.

I wouldn't say she sounds wildly insecure--just garden-variety insecure. I can't speak for the rest of the world, but in American culture, people are taught that quiet is suspicious and untrustworthy. Have you never heard such oh-so-common expressions as "it's always the quiet one" or "it's the quiet ones you have to watch out for"?

I got comments like this a lot growing up. Most people constantly spout off whatever comes to mind, but when a person is quiet, you can never tell what they're thinking. I think this uncertainty makes people uncomfortable and insecure, and the discomfort and insecurity in turn lead to suspicion and hostility.

I had to drive 15 high school students to a workshop-type-thing recently. My wife is their teacher and was there with them so I had to hang around them all day. They are all your typical, terribly insecure teenagers and they drive me insane so I spent most of the time sitting out of the way and reading.
At one point a couple of them were hanging around me and one says "You're so quiet, it's like you're plotting our demise or something". I looked over the top of my book at him and said "Actually, I'm doing my very best not to think about you at all" and proceeded to stare at him until he became uncomfortable and went away.
I wish people with nothing to say would feel more comfortable shutting up!

You should have shot back "I was always taught that if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

You should have said "People who talk too much are just attention seekers" or something similar. I hate it when people say things like that. I can never think of a response at the time then I spend the rest of my life wondering why they said it.

I am beginning to appreciate (at the age of 40!) that there are some people out there who's brains go into hyper stimulated states whenever they are gossiping or figuring someone out. These are the same people who's brains switch off whenever they have to do some work.
