I pretend to get things because I know they will get mad if I don't.

It’s a no-win situation when you don’t understand what someone is saying, because you only have two options: ask them to repeat themselves and they’ll get frustrated and repeat it very slowly like they think you’re an idiot, or say that you understand when you really don’t and risk having a problem later.

Yeah that and then they think you didn't listen.

Another thing that drives people nuts if you don't understand what they're saying through their vague words, and you ask them to draw a picture. It annoys the hell out of them.

I always just pretend like I know and have issues later... I wish I had a NT decoder ring.

Same here! The amount of times I have been into important meetings with social workers, doctors and neurologists and ended up saying yes to something I REALLY didn't want to say yes to is shocking! One time I went for a routine check-up for my Tourettes with the neurologist and I came out with a prescription for anti-psychotics (I am anti-medication personally!) which I apparently said I wanted... It turned out one of the many things I had nodded and said yes to was the question, 'would you like to try the aripiprazole again?' I wonder how I have made it this far in life to be honest!

This happens to me all the time, very often in therapy. I usually go on automatic/scripted responses while I try to process things. This is really frustrating as I sometimes agree to things that aren't true.

I seem to be pretty good at pretending to understand, when I dont. I have had a lot of practice in my life.
