Old things - associating with past memories
I like old things because I like to think of how they were sitting around, without me knowing of their existence or that I'd come to own them, during moments while I was alive in the past.
For example, my Les Paul (type of guitar) was made in 1990 - so it's about a year younger than me. So for my entire memory, it's been sitting around being used by the previous owner while I was living my entire life. So every moment I can think of in my life, this guitar was sitting around somewhere (and I have an extremely good memory, I also have the exact dates days and times memorized for many of the days and important events that happened in my life). It's just mind boggling to me. I just stare at it in wonder sometimes, or hold it thinking about that. To me it's more exciting than owning something older than me, because it's almost as old as me. I like thinking of/wondering what was going on with it while I was living some moment in my life.
I do the same thing with other old objects. There's just something about the incomprehensibility of it all - I know it's existed before I came across it, but it's just mind boggling to think of what was happening with it during that time. I'll think of some important event, and know, that during that moment, that object was sitting around somewhere -but now it's in my hands, I own it!-, and it blows my mind.
I have some ride tickets, for the state fair last year, saved in a drawer with other small objects of importance - me and a friend went last year; first time I had gone in about 13 years - and I had an excellent time. I remember the date - Friday, September 2nd, 2011 - the time we arrived, 4:36 PM - the time we left, 9:17 PM. I also remember the time that day any time I checked it on my phone.
What about you? Do you associate or think about old objects with past memories, whether you owned or knew of the object at the time or not? Do you do it with -very specific- memories?
