You've been told you are insensitive or lack empathy?

Just wondering how they compare to the usual overblown claims l hear about my own behavior/beliefs.

Yes, mostly because when someone was crying in front of me or angry I would not react of say much of anything. Mostly because I did not know how. Many times I have been called cold or insensitive over this

...the whole scene to me is very surreal feeling. I freeze up and just go blank when people get that way.

I have been told MANY time of my lack of empathy. I don't think it is because I necessarily lack empathy but just don't know how to show it. I have never known what to do when someone is crying or angry -- typically I just shoot right to logic and end up saying something that further hurts/angers the person crying. I mean... I have seen how others react in those sorts of situations... and I guess at times I can be successful at emulating that -- but it still feels very weird.
