Did they consult autistic people when drafting the IDEA?

I said autistic people, not their parents or teachers.

Paternalistic attitudes from NTs to ASD people seem so taken for granted by both communities and that is a cause for great concern. The failure to consult, consider, include ASD people in matters, commentary and policy which concerns them centrally demonstrates an appalling fact, the hallmark of paternalism: treating an adult group as if they were eternal children, unfit to be included in adult things.

It is repugnant and insulting. There are many instances of this paternalistic exclusion everyday - in the American media - uninformed NT reporters - Autism Speaks - this example of the OP's perhaps.. research design, dogma, and so it goes on...

It is sad that the ASD community is so slow/unwilling to write even single short letters or emails to offending parties (including institutions and media) informing them that paternalism is completely unacceptable in the 21st century with its ethos of equality and inclusion for all groups.
