I thought people behind counters in convenience stores and small resturants and such were nice to me because I was s kid with obvious problems.

But now I'm an adult and look nothing like a kid any longer. Yet I'm still getting the same super niceness.

There's a nearby BBQ place that sells a side order of really good mash patatoes and gravy. And I have gone in there a few times to get just that. So last night as I'm walking up to the glass door she has this big smile and is waving at me. And as soon as I step in she hands me the side order and says "it's on the house".

And there's other places where I experience that kind of friendliness.

I would say it depends on the area where you live in----and the personality of the person behind the counter.

In "bad" areas, the service tends to be less courteous than in "better" areas. But this is far from universal

I have experienced both super niceness, and super rudeness.

Most of the time, though, the service is at least courteous.

I don't really interact with them. It's just the way they greet me.
I wonder if it's like a feel sorry for type thing.
Like being extra nice to someone because they're in a wheelchair.
Know what I mean?

My cynical side says people behind counters have a motive to be nice. They want to sell stuff to you.

Maybe it's because you look like a nice person and you're attractive? :)

Are you by any chance in the Deep South? I've seen some folks like that around here.

I think that is really great. If people are nice to me, I don't worry about why they are, I am just really grateful and happy that they are and it makes me want to be nice to others. Kindness is contagious. There should be a lot more of it.

I get similar special treatment. I get the high-pitched sing-song voice, the over-helpfulness, the free food, etc.
