Ok, I'm feeling pretty lonely (surprise surprise).

I'm trying to get ideas on new things to try to meet people, like events to go to or the like. I'm pretty much out of ideas. :/

Can anybody share what they have done in the past to get out into things?

This really depends on your age, what you do and what your interests are. I guess people are always going to suggest clubs and stuff or you could try finding an aspie social group in your area. Another thing that might work is to try doing a short course of some description, I just started back at TAFE and that seems like a good way of meeting people.

Volunteer work can also be OK. Just be choosy. After all, you are offering your time. You can leave if they creep you out or whatever.

I belong to an episcopalian church. They are a very activist church, and there are always things going on there.

Like every week one day they assemble meals for seniors and somebody delivers them.

There are always maintenance days going on somewhere, like the parks, public housing, or through united way and similar. And most non-profits welcome people.

Also the various walks for "name that need".

During the summer I sometimes play cards or board games up in the park. Since it's not very organized, people don't care that I'm somewhat strange. And it's a lot of duffers, but they have kids and grandkids ;)

You are absolutely right, Jeremy, but, how can you find an aspie social group if not everyone in the world is an Aspie. I think that is very hard.

I haven't tried it yet, but I plan on taking some cooking classes. I'm sure it will be much less random than going to a bar or party, and that lack of structure is what stresses me out in normal social situations (like bars and parties).

If you're in, or near, a big city, they probably have some local adult education group that is always having classes on every type of subject.

I've met a lot of people through swimming, as well as being in a few special interest clubs at my school. There might be something at the community center for special interests, like arts, music or computer programming. It really depends what you like to do. If you're doing something you like (or at least moderately enjoy), it'll probably be a better experience than if you're doing something you hate.

I'd try coffee houses, but I don't like coffee. Caffeine makes me about 10 times as hyper as I already am (not a good idea) and it's too noisy with too many things going on at once for me to think straight.

Vicious psychotic rampages can work......

Just kidding. What these guys have suggested is a good idea.

But what if you hate everything?

When I was young my mother used to sign me up for all kinds of youth activities like cubs, camps, church choir, etc. Since one of my obsessions is airplanes, I joined Air Cadets as a teen. In school I was in the bowling team. After graduation I changed jobs quite a lot, but eventually got hired by a small software company that had already hired most of the geeks I knew in school. We got along OK because they were geeky anyway, so we spent a lot of time together outside of work going to pubs or coffee shops to talk about programming. I also eventually bought a motorcycle and joined a touring club that went tenting on weekends. During the summer a lot of motorcyclists like to hang out at the coffee shops to chat and show off, so I started doing that, too. I bought and sold several motorcycles, and eventually bought a "conversation starter" (ie: rare and exotic bike) and found that complete strangers (including non-bikers) would walk over to me and start asking questions about the bike.

For all of that socializing, though, I still lead a rather solitary life. The longest-lasting friendships have all started when I went to social gatherings, searched for the shyest person in the room and quietly said "hello"....

You should get involved with community clubs that are in your area. Such as swimming, singing, other sports, etc. This will help you meet people.
