Where do you go meeting people who appreciate someone who is not one of the herd, doesn't engage in hypocrisy and social games and politics, and has a critical attitude towards the "appropriate", "acceptable", etc.?

If you're religious, try a place of worship. If you have certain interests, try finding an outlet where there are people who have those same interests, etc.

Anywhere where the rejects go. The Intellectual Fringe comes to mind. Wherever the homeless/unemployed/hippie/anarchist people hang out. Those aren't guarantees, but I think you'll find more acceptance with the people who are also seeking it out.

I agree that it is part random, but I also agree that if you hang out at places where open-minded people (hippies, free thinking academics, etc.) tend to be, you will have better than average luck... it's still a crap shoot though. Most people are not open-minded or accepting, so keep that in mind if you find yourself striking out a lot. Stick with it, and you'll find good people eventually.
