I was out looking around yesterday, and I found it difficult to talk. I mean, not that I couldn't work my vocal cords, but more like a mental block. It was as though talking was something that had become extremely uncomfortable for me to do. In my mind it ranked up there along side of giving myself a papercut. I could do it, but the thought and interest was a huge negative one for me. Like I would rather just walk away from someone rather than talk back to them.

Does anyone else experience this problem once in a while? Where there are times talking is something you just cannot do, or go out of your way to avoid doing?

Best,

I usually have that problem when I try to discuss VERY emotional topics. Otherwise, unless I'm really down and depressed or angry, I'm fine talking. For those times that my emotions override my vocalization apperatus, I find I can usually get it out by typing or writing.

Sometimes I don't have the will to say much, so yeah, it is hard to talk, more than I would like.

It happens to me, too. Sometimes, even when I think I'm doing ok I "lose" the words I need. They are in my head - somewhere - I just don't know where, and I can't find them.

And other times, the whole "talking" thing is just too much work all the way around.

Ditto.
I can talk fine...if I have nothing to say though, I will most likely just sit and say nothing and feel unomfortable because I have nothing to say.

OP: All the time, but you know.

Mental block, autistic walls; Daniel the hermit crab, Daniel the turtle, they all describe him adequately enough.

Hmmm... With me, it's not the "getting the words" out that tends to be a problem. It's the "getting people to listen" that gets in the way. Usually, people interrupt me when I get half a sentence out. Obviously, it's not the aspergers doing this, but NT's just being jerks. :?

Funny you should ask this. I just found a great piece of writing on this very topic.

My problems tend to be due to things like getting nervous and talking faster or softer, because I'm afraid of what they might think of my words or answer, which invariably leads to mumbling of some form. I also sometimes stutter a bit; especially on the first word or a word that just doesn't want to be spoken at that particular moment. Then, I also have the mental block bit. I know how to speak, and I have words to use, but sometimes, all that will come through is sensory info, like the smell of the subject or the color of the word, which needless to say, helps nada. Or I'll forget what it is that I'm saying. Or I'll be distracted and end up on an entirely unrelated subject. Or I'll end up on a seemingly entirely other subject that is based on a logical leap to me, but hard to explain to others.

It happens to me when I am out of my element or around people who make me uncomfortable. I find talking to be very...how-you-say...undesirable.......

Lol. Actually I did, but I guess it wasn't very obvious.

It happens to me to. It happens often when I am with other people who talk a lot and I can't relate or think of anything to say. That then makes it uncomfortable for me to talk because I don't think others will care about anything I say as it will sound awkward or unrelated.

It happens to me more than every so often. It is the exception rather than the rule. It is worse at certain times, such as first thing in the morning and when I'm under severe stress.
A lot of the time, I need someone to speak first before I am able to speak. I can, with an effort, initiate conversation, and my music teaching and these job interviews that I've been going to lately have helped greatly with that. They both have a sort of ritual to them, I can get a picture in my mind beforehand and prepare for the talking that I'll have to do.
